Des Moines Iowa January 14 Miss Florence Cochrane ousted by the Broadhorn district school board on charges of incompetency and telling risqué stories to pupils was cleared of the charges by county superintendent Walter McGee. Pullman Company Loses Lawsuit Over Ticket Refusal
Washington January 14. An effort to collect damages from the Pullman company for refusing to sell tickets to a negro while selling to whites failed. The Interstate Commerce Commission ruled the statute used could not be violated by such a refusal. The commission held the action did not involve discrimination under section 2 of the Commerce Act because it did not concern unequal transportation pricing.

The United States case against Arthur Retland, from Adams county near Mt Etna, charged with sending obscene material through the mail, went to the jury at noon after a federal court trial before Judge Thomas C. Munger. Witnesses included Lucille Shaeffer and handwriting expert E C Worthington, with postmasters from Corning Mt Etna and Carbon testifying. The jury remained out at 2 pm. conviction could bring up to 5 years, a $5,000 fine, or both.

Express Men Are Awarded Increased Pay
The United States board of arbitration granted a $4,500,000 wage increase for 60,000 American Railway Express employees, amounting to two and a half cents an hour. The decision covers conductors baggage men and brakemen and is retroactive to January 1, 1927. Messengers on train service receive extra allowances of four and a quarter cents an hour for handling mail and eight and a half cents when both mail and baggage are handled, effective January 13.

The Union County farm bureau started the baby beef club with 40 members to receive membership cards by mail. About 30 members are expected to enroll, each feeding calves to be shown at the county fair in September and then sent to Des Moines for the state fair.
