In Scranton Pennsylvania on January 13 four men were confirmed dead with seven others believed dead and an unknown number entombed at the National Mine of the Alden Coal Company in Minooka. About twenty men were thought to remain behind a rock barrier as rescuers rush to reach them.
Henry Ford and William B. Mayo arrived in Washington from Detroit to confer with Secretary Weeks on the proposed purchase and lease of government nitrate and water power projects at Muscle Shoals Alabama. The party kept silent before the meeting, and Weeks said he would provide a full account after the conference.
Cannes reports that invitations to the Genoa economic conference have been sent by the allied supreme council. The United States is asked to dispatch between three and five delegates.
Mrs Horace Dow went to Kansas City Missouri believing the slain man in a garage last Saturday is her husband Harry Donelson who disappeared last April. A telegram from Rev E R Dow Seward Nebraska described the slain man. Dow and his wife wed in Des Moines South Dakota in 1889.
Des Moines reports robbers looted the Robert Penkhus store at Templeton Iowa at 2 o clock this morning. Clothing valued at 2500 dollars was taken and hauled away in an express truck. The robbery is described as one of the boldest in Iowa.

Washington reports that Truman v Newberry of Michigan won his long Senate seat fight. The senate by 46 to 41 approved that Newberry was entitled to the seat, with Republicans voting for and a mix of Republicans and Democrats against. The action also condemns excessive campaign spending by any candidate.
The infant Earl of Shrewsbury contests the late Earl of Shrewsbury’s will after executor moves to probate. Mrs Eleanor White Hughes Brownlee, famed for Britain’s race track wins, inherited the bulk of the estate and faces accusations of exploitation during the late lord’s life.
The allied reparations commission rules a provisional delay for Germany on its reparations account. The supreme council notes the Genoa conference as a factor. Prime Minister Lloyd George heads to London this evening and may stop in Paris to consult President Millerand en route.
Washington January 13 The Associated Press reports President Millerand of France has directed M Araut, head of the French delegation, to continue at his present points, at the end of the arms conference.
Chicago January 12 A decision of the railroad labor board holds that an on duty fist fight justifies discharge. George Harmonson a blacksmith at Northwestern Chicago shops was dismissed November 10 1920 for fighting a fellow worker and later ordered reinstated.
A casket containing the body of a young woman, preserved in alcohol, was found by a railroad repair gang near Delta Point La. The casket reportedly slipped into the Mississippi River when a nearby graveyard caved in, trainmen said.
John S. Anderson aged 81 died at his Creston home after a five day pneumonia illness. A Civil War veteran born in Tennessee he worked fifty years as a railroad engineer for Rock Island and Burlington. Survived by Mary Elizabeth Brown his wife and seven children Charles Emma John Jennie Rob Frank George and Robert, funeral arrangements to be announced.
Governor Neff announced martial law will stay in force in Mexia until every vestige of lawlessness is swept clean from the community. The statement cited the previous declaration made yesterday to curb unrest and restore order in Mexia Texas.
J J Johnston was seriously injured in Boone Iowa when a falling limb toppled his ladder he fell to the ground and the limb struck his chest. He is not expected to recover.
Paris Jan 12 M Poincaire informed President Millerand this afternoon after a phone conference that he would accept the task of forming a cabinet to succeed the Briand ministry and would present his list of colleagues tomorrow.
William Rosina, a recluse miner in Numa Louisiana, died alone in his shack. Coroner W. B. Miller found a bank deposit of $20,000 at a Rome Italy bank and deeds to Jerome County real estate. No relatives appear. fortune may pass to Iowa.
The Progressive Poultry and Pet Stock Association of Creston elected officers for 1923 and decided to hold the next show in January. The pet stock department is discontinued for now due to lack of local interest. Poultry awards cover Dark Cornish, White Plymouth Rocks, Light Barred Rocks, Dark Barred Rocks, with multiple wins for Geo Beard, J W Hobson, R A Saunders, Hazel Burkheimer and others. show ended after three and a half days at the skating rink.
Audrey Creighton Ryan, a California violinist, is reported dying in Neuilly’s American hospital after swallowing three poison tablets. Her husband, Thomas Stewart Ryan of the Chicago Tribune Paris staff, has been arrested for administering the pills under threat of killing her with a knife if she refused. England’s death rate shows a 50 percent decline since 1700.
Five people were seriously injured perhaps fatally and ten to twelve others slightly hurt when three rear cars of a Northern Pacific train derailed five miles northeast of Connell Washington. Dispatcher reports indicate varying severity among the injured.
Edward Clayton and Thomas O Grady, two of four escapees from the state reformatory, were captured in Chicago and brought back to Lincoln to serve sentences at the state penitentiary. Convictions carry from one to ten years imprisonment after trial.
