Reports from Hankow say Mrs Jusin Killen of Northfield Minnesota, 50, sacrificed herself to distract Chinese bandits during a raid on the Tsacyang mission in Hupeh. She urged the attackers to take her instead of her husband Professor Hoff while he and his wife Bernard Hoff were wounded. The bandits fled with Mrs Killen, later traced to Henan, and have not been captured. The Hoff family remains in a hospital at Tsao Yang. The bandits reportedly offered release if allowed to enroll in the army.
Briar Cliff Manor New York January 11 in thirty motor trucks workers hauled 15000 cubic feet of snow from Scarborough station to Briar Cliff Lodge. The snow came in six gondola cars from Thendora Adirondacks and will fund the American Olympic Skiing team trip abroad by supporting ski jumping slides and landing platforms built for a Sunday public exhibition.
Continued conversion of French francs into dollars in France and nearby markets pushed the franc to 4.81 cents, a record low, compared with yesterday’s 4.834 cents. Sterling opened at $4.2778, matching its prior low.
