Reports from Shanghai and London say foreigners flee Hankow and Kiukiang as looting and unrest spread along the Yangtze. British authorities plan to withdraw Chinese troops from the Cantonese zone while foreign concessions are policed jointly.
Dispatch from Japanese sources reports Chinese troops unable to manter the order in the British concession at Kiukiang. Coolie mobs broke foreign section barriers and customs officers sought refuge aboard an American warship.
Athens reports the death of Nikolas Kalogeropoulos veteran Greek statesman who served as premier war minister and finance minister in the 1918 cabinet that followed the Zaimis era. He later formed another ministry after the war.
Mrs H M O Hara, living in Leningrad and married to an Omaha man, faced deportation after entering on a visitor permit. She plans to move to Canada to avoid deportation and will seek re entry to the United States as soon as possible.
Rogers Hornsby signed a two year deal to play second base and captain the New York Giants. The former St Louis manager, praised for guiding the Cardinals to a pennant and world title, moves to New York for a reportedly near forty thousand dollar annual salary. He said he was pleased with terms and the chance to play for the Giants.
Washington January 8 Representatives of the National Orange the American Farm Bureau Federation and the National Farmers union met to plan joint action for farm legislation. They stressed cooperation and adopted a resolution to combine legislative programs. L J Tabor Columbus master of the National Orange Charles Barrett Union City S C Thompson Chicago Farm Bureau and John Trumbull Kansas Farmers union spoke in favor of the plan.
Cleveland report of Pat McDermott, jailed for the Canton slaying of Don R. Mellett and a key witness in Rudner and Mazer trials, declaring he will tell the truth if allowed to testify, though he claims authorities will not permit it. He was moved to Cleveland to testify against Ben Nadel for harboring him while he hunted for the murder.
J Reynolds, a Wyoming horse buyer in Creston, suddenly went insane. He was treated at a doctor’s office, then moved to the city jail when violent. He escaped during transfer and was recaptured and returned to jail awaiting relatives.
Story County assessors refuse to accept a 35 cent per roll pay cut decreed by the board of supervisors. About thirty men are involved in the strike across the county including city assessors in towns other than Ames which were paid 50 to 55 cents per roll.
Henry R. Martin president of the Aetna State Bank died of heart disease Friday while en route to Anaheim California. He left Oelwein with his wife and sister in law for an outing in California after leaving here Monday. A telegram received here this morning advised of the death.
In Panama City the public mood shifts against the Pan American treaty as the government curbs mass meetings and delays a report. Dr Harmodio Arias urges Panamanians to resist, arguing the pact grants U S military transit rights, control over communications and aviation, and perpetual occupation of parts of the canal area.
Four men attempted a payroll heist on Charles Cowan near Des Moines as he escorted about $20,000 to the Orilla mine payroll. They fled when Cowan was found by a deputy sheriff.
Edmund W. Booth editor and general manager of the Grand Rapids Press died after a week long illness. He was 60 and belonged to a prominent family of newspaper owners in Grand Rapids Michigan. He led the paper as a longtime newsroom executive and manager.

A fire last night destroyed most of Shadows Lawn the New Jersey summer White House used by President Wilsons era. A short circuit in the lighting system is blamed. The mansion and surrounding shrubbery on about 20 acres were razed. Owner Hubert T Parson of F W Woolworth Co was in New York. loss estimated at 1,000,000.
Teachers from rural Douglas township schools gathered at Douglas No. 8 schoolhouse on Thursday to share ideas on school management and to organize a township arithmetic contest starting January 10. Miss Day will supervise the contest over ten weeks. Word exchanges included correspondence, phonograph records, story books, and reading seat work.
Eight Texas officers were under arrest on charges of slaying or assisting the slaying of Tomaz Nunez and four others in the brush country near Raymondville on Sept. 9. The group includes Sheriff Raymond Teller and Deputy Frank Brandt, with Arturo Flores, a jailer, facing accessory counts. The Nunez widow, a former Mexican national, and the Mexican consul cited two of the slain as Mexican nationals.

The fifth in a series of instruction schools for Union county grade and rural teachers opened at 9 this morning with nearly 100 teachers attending. Classes ran until 2 this afternoon in the junior high building led by J. H. Hart and F. E Fuller. Miss Ella Day organized arrangements as county superintendent. Another instruction school on history and geography is planned this year.
James H. Miller 59 died at his home 700 West Adams Street at 7 last evening after a year of ill health. Survived by wife Mrs. George Jensen Omaha and sons Glen Glenwood Paul at home. Funeral at home Sunday 2:30 conducted by Rev C W Graham with burial at Graceland Cemetery. Born in Ohio in 1867, he spent 25 years employed by the government as a rural mail carrier from Creston post office.
Washington reports that Representative Crisp Democrat of Georgia denied that the Curtis Crisp farm relief bill was authored in Secretary Jardine's office. He said the draft came from the house office building after consultations with farm relief advocates in and out of Congress. The denial followed remarks by Representative Aswell Louisiana ranking Democrat on the agricultural committee suggesting a named bill could influence McNary Haugen favorable reporting.
The Union County Protective Association will hold its annual meeting at the courthouse this afternoon. Election of officers for the year is the main item on the agenda, with a yearlong program to be outlined before adjournment. The group, formed in Union County last March, aims to curb thefts, especially poultry depredations, from farm homes.
Firefighters responded to a roof blaze at the John Dowdell home on 107 Sherman Avenue last evening. The fire department arrived at 7 10 P M to contain the small fire with minor damage reported.
Creston high school defeated Lamont high 23 to 14 before a 500 crowd with Hipes scoring nine for Creston and Balery five for Lamont. Oshel and Keefe subbed. Casey refereed. upcoming games against Osceola and Greenfield noted.
Bb. L. Tyler of Dodge township has been chosen to represent Union county farm bureau at the Iowa Farm Bureau federation annual meeting in Des Moines. The gathering runs January 11 through 14, with Tyler serving on the Union county farm bureau board of directors and other local members planning to attend portions of the sessions.
