Girl Asphyxiated as Family Hospitalized in Iowa Gas Incident

Davenport Iowa January 8 Wica Clara Keppy nineteen year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Keppy of Donahue fourteen miles north of here is dead and the parents are in a serious condition from gas asphyxiation. A week earlier the family installed a gas heating plant. Sunday night while asleep all three were overcome by escaping gas and were found this morning the daughter dead and the parents conscious Mr Keppy is president of the Donahue Savings Bank and a former Iowa Legislator.

Professor Overcome from Fumes of Automobile

Professor Merle Myers of Pillsbury School in Owatonna Minnesota was rescued in Cedar Rapids after being overcome by automobile heater fumes. Found unconscious in a ditch on the Lincoln Highway west of the city he was on his way home from Fort Madison where he had visited his mother when discovered his car was headed back toward Cedar Rapids. A farmer reported the car to the police.

The Mitylene correspondent reports an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Mustafa Kemal Pasha, president of Turkey, at Smyrna. A hand grenade intended for him injured his wife.

Confessed Shooter Sisters Declared Insane in Iowa

Sadie and Alice Norton spinster sisters were found insane by the county insanity commission after Sadie Norton confessed to shooting a neighbor boy on November 25. The act followed nights of guarding with a revolver and shotgun amid delusions of persecution. The wounded boy has since recovered. Both sisters were released on $5,000 bonds and bound over to the grand jury on assault with intent to murder. They will be sent to the state hospital at Independence.

Burlington Issues Statement to Employer

Galesburg Illinois January 8 Shopcraft of the Burlington route hired since the nationwide strike of 1922 were assured by the railroad that they will not be replaced by men who left the company during the strike in an order posted at local shops. The statement was issued to offset reports that former employees would be reinstated after B M Jewell head of the striking shopcraftsmen withdrew all strike orders.

Police Arrest Boys Charge Stealing Automobile in Omaha

Two youths, Harry J. Rowland and Earl Katzenberger, were arrested by Creston officers on information from Omaha police for stealing a roadster taken December 20 from Mondamin, Harrison county. Detectives Heller and Montag moved the car to Mondamin, with additional charges of stealing another car and driving to Des Moines before abandoning it near Creston Red Oak.
