Des Moines officials plan a joint corn belt campaign to organize a 50 member advisory committee and recruit 11 other midwestern states for a united effort to market the 1925 corn crop. Governor Hammill urges organizing the corn producing area to achieve business parity with other industries.
Des Moines reports that nearly all of the 50 appointed for the cornbelt agricultural marketing conference will attend the session tomorrow with Governor Hammill presiding. Bankers and eastern business leaders are showing interest as Iowa moves toward establishing an export corporation. A smaller executive committee may be named from the 50.
Fairfield Iowa January 7 Associated Press dispatches report that Miss Ernestine Cooks dean of women at Parsons college is being considered as a possible successor to Miss Elizabeth Conrad at Ohio State University. Cooks is known for her work with student self government and for tightening supervision of private homes housing college women.
Snowbound travelers in Bayard and surrounding areas report privation and hardship after storms since December 13. John Keith of Alliance is known to have died, while J E Shea and his wife are missing, possibly trapped in vast snow drifts. Others remain stranded at ranches and some slept in haystacks or abandoned huts.
Naples reports Vesuvius emitting smoke and lava in small amounts. The eruption attracts many foreigners who watch the glowing crater amid the snow covered mountain. Officials say it is an ordinary outbreak acting as a safety valve for nearby villages.
Des Moines January 7 hearing will be held in Creston at 2 30 p m January 19 on protests by eight Creston taxpayers against issuing city improvement fund bonds totaling 2400 dollars for oil flushing intersections on Adams Union Mills and Jefferson streets. The taxpayers contend the Horrabin company of Des Moines was not legally awarded the contract.
Des Moines and other cities report minor temperature drops with readings from six degrees above zero in Charles City to zero in Mason City. Sioux City eight, Dubuque 16, Keokuk 14, Davenport 18, and Des Moines 16 reflect statewide chill after night.
A heavy snowstorm struck northwestern Nebraska near blizzard strength on Wednesday, disrupting traffic and delaying rail service. The storm extended into northeastern Wyoming and crippled railroad operations there as well.
A storm swept the Rocky Mountain region causing one death when Pueblo merchant Arthur F. Ward’s car plunged from a bridge. Snowbound highways stalled autos, winds hindered air mail pilots near Rock Springs Washington, and one plane wrecked with no injuries. Relief was forecast for today.
George Wilson, an all American halfback from Washington's 1925 team, will captain the Los Angeles Tigers for their January 16 game with Harold Grange and the Chicago Bears. The local squad added Darrell Hufford Walter O'Brien George Baker Stan Ford and Bigl Cole USC tackles to strengthen the lineup.
The Associated Press reports a telegram from Irving Berlin stating he wishes to avoid publicity. He claims he has not spoken for publication beyond expressing happiness and has nothing further to say to address fabrications in newspapers.
The House committee probing foreign monopolies in rubber halted hearings to correct a mix-up over an executive session and the Post report alleging disclosed dispatches. Chairman Parker sent Kellogg a letter denying any confidential documents were shown, clarifying Hoover’s testimony concerned consumer group representations and discussions with foreign monopolies. Democratic Rep. Black condemned Hoover as propagandist for tire interests amid inflation fears.
Washington January 7 The senate judiciary committee postponed further action on whether the Department of Justice should have brought contempt proceedings against the Aluminum Company of America. Secretary Mellon holds a large stock interest. Testimony will be sought from Attorney General Sargent Assistant Attorney General Donovan Chairman Ver non W Van Fleet FTC and Otis B Johnson and Millard F Hudson of the commission.
Senator Brookhart of Iowa argued the current federal appropriations unfairly burden agricultural states and reward profiteering states. He noted Iowa's wealth rose $2.8 million less than the national average from 1912 to 1922 due to excess profits, and warned agriculture elsewhere faces similar strain, citing Connecticut where farm wealth shrank while overall business wealth rose 90 percent in a decade.
President Coolidge asked Congress to appropriate 11 963 dollars to cover costs of the air board which recently examined the aircraft situation after Col William Mitchell publicly charged the air service administration and faced court martial.

George M. Thompson, 301 North Vine street, a railroad switchman, lost two toes and suffered facial cuts after an incident in the railway yards about 10 30 this forenoon. He was taken to Greater Community hospital for X ray to assess injuries and remains in serious condition with no fractures reported.
C. J. Smith longtime district court reporter for Lee County died at Fort Madison after a stroke in the Fort Madison courtroom. He was taken to Sacred Heart hospital and remained unconscious until death. He was father of Frederick C. Smith, city editor of the Gate City and former Des Moines Register staff.
Greek Prime Minister Pangalos communicates to London, asserting his dictatorship aims to curb communist propaganda while maintaining government character, foreign policy, and League of Nations obligations.
Former Illinois governor Frank O Lowden told a mass meeting in Lincoln that a federal farm board could empower producer cooperatives to store or export surplus. He warned agriculture is out of gear with the economy and stressed strengthening cooperative marketing as the key to American farming’s future.
At the annual board of supervisors meeting Miss Beulah V. Spencer announced reappointment of county physicians J. W. Coakley O. E. Coakley F. M. Pitts Edc Ayers Leslie L. Lamb C. C. Rambo and F. M. Loomis for 1926. Cromwell supervisor L. F. Godden named county farm visitor. Township assessors will get instructions on farming data collection and tax listing accuracy to prevent omissions.
Chicago January 7. Evelyn Nesbit Thaw tells her physician she drank gin beer and whiskey hoping it would end her life. When asked if she wants to get well she replies no I am sorry I didn't want to get well. Doctor says she should be out in 10 days.
Fred Lauritzen 32 of Menlo was struck and killed by a car driven by Morgan Kempel of Adair in Atlantic. A coroner's jury exonerated Kempel. Lauritzen left a widow and three children.
Mrs. Annie Crowley aged 48 of Lemars died from shock after an automobile crash between Lemars and Sioux City last night. The car struck a ditch near Hinton and hit a telephone pole. A passing motorist carried her to Lemars but she died before arrival.
Creston high school prepares to open basketball season at home against Greenfield in Irving gym Friday night. The Creston lineup features Gerald Cox as guard captain with Hilding Olson center and Phillip Hipes and Mike Reckner as forwards, joined by William Reid at guard. Coach H X Scott notes five other regulars may see action, including Clyde Keefe, Bill Landers, Leslie Putnam, Bert Hollister, and Robert Plowman.
Leon Morrison and Joe Thomas were elected trustees of the Congregational church at the annual meeting held Wednesday night. Morrison serves five years and Thomas one. Officers and committee chairs were chosen, including Armstrong as clerk and treasurer, Newcomb as organist, Morrison as financial secretary, Harsh as Sunday school superintendent, and Colbert and Leach named to roles in membership flowers decor.
Mrs P H Duffy died at 4 p m Wednesday at her daughter Mrs Thomas Dailey home in Chicago She had lived with another daughter Mrs Healey north west of Creston and left Creston about three weeks ago for the visit Her children include Mrs Healey Creston Mrs Dalley Chicago and Mrs W P Kelly Afton She was aunt of C J Callagy Creston Funeral in Creston Saturday at St Malachys Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery
Major General William Lassiter, commander in the Panama Canal Zone, was suggested to replace General Pershing as neutral head of the Tacna Arica plebiscitary commission if a substitute is needed to run the Arica work during Pershing’s return trip for medical and dental treatment.
O C Lutz 50, an insurance agent of 305 New York avenue, attempted suicide at his home on 205 New York avenue last night. He fired a .32 revolver into his skull, survived until this afternoon though no recovery was expected, as doctors said. He had recently sold his insurance business and faced despondency.
From Chicago dated January 7 the government bureau of agricultural economics reports a 50 percent rise in potato shipments over the past week, driving prices down toward normal levels. The peak price of $4.35 per hundred pounds in late 1925 contrasted with 65 cents the prior year, as 1,370 carloads of Canadian potatoes have been imported.
Mrs Stuart Latimer sister of George D Newcomb of 1014 West Adams Street died suddenly at her Bloomfield home. Creston residents remember her as Mrs Lulu Newcomb. Funeral plans include transportation for the Newcomb family, arrival of the body Friday night, a brief mausoleum service at Graceland, and burial preparations at Deitrick's mortuary with Rev C C Harris officiating.
Thomspon and Charles Forbes had convictions in the bureau fraud conspiracy case affirmed by the appeals court in Chicago. Thompson, a St. Louis contractor, is at Palm Beach Florida where physicians say heart disease requires the milt climate.
