Decline in Iowa Child Labor Permits Cited by Official

Des Moines December reports from A L Urick Iowa commissioner of labor note fewer child labor permits issued as economic strain and education interest grow. Data show 1919 20 peak with 2 691 boys and 1 611 girls under 16 employed, while 1922 24 totals rise to 8 132 for two year periods. Permit issuance in early 1925 reaches 346 first half year and 272 in summer and fall across cities including Davenport Sioux City Muscatine Clinton Dubuque and Cedar Rapids.

Spirit of Ivywild Painter George Upp Lives On

George Upp the painter died last year but his Ivywild farm near Hamilton Illinois remains a studio and refuge. His grave features a cement lion headstone and the gallery walls display many of his works. Visitors come to see the gallery picnic under trees and speak with his household as they tour the unfinished last landscape sketch and his brushes and palette.
