The judge overruled parts of State's Attorney Crowe closing remarks calling them cowardly and dastardly. He set September 10 at 9 30 a m for the penalty decision in the Leopold Loeb kidnapping murder case, with only the defendants and key participants present.
In Chicago on Aug 28 the Leopold and Loeb murder case concluded oral arguments and a brief formal hearing on guilty pleas to kidnapping for ransom. Jacob Franks and Captain William Lchoemaker testified as state witnesses, though their remarks were inaudible amid the courtroom noise.
Judge John R. Caverly took the Franks kidnapping and murder case under advisement. He scheduled a decision on September 10 at 9 30 a m and barred general public entry that day, allowing only defendants, attorneys, court staff, and newspapers.
Des Moines Aug 28 W C Edson of Buena Vista county and E P Harrison of Pottawattamie county appear as the sole candidates for speaker of the Iowa house of representatives. The position opened when J H Anderson ran for governor At the state fair yesterday both men drew interest with supporters predicting a likely victory Harrison led the farm bloc in the last session while Edson represents the liberal element.
Des Moines Aug 28 Glenn A C Haynes auditor of state resigns to become executive secretary of the Iowa Good Roads Association. Deputy W E Thomas of Red Oak will succeed him on Sept 1. Haynes plans a tour of Illinois Wisconsin and Minnesota to study road programs before drafting Iowa plan. Governor Kendall praises Thomas’s qualifications.
Cecil Freel of Murray, 17, known for 29 straight Iowa tournament victories at the state fair, was stricken with acute appendicitis on the courts Wednesday. He was taken to Greater Community hospital and had an operation. If recovered, he planned to compete against Mossman of Eldora and possibly at the national tournament in St Paul.
Mrs. Sarah Lutman died this morning at 4 10 at her home 309 North Maple street after a week illness. Born January 12 1841 she was 83. Survived by eight children including Charles Lutman Afton William Nichols Shannon City S M Snyder Albany Oregon J E Lutman Grand Rapids Mich J H Lutman Long Beach Cal W W Lutman Chicago All but J E Lutman were present. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Captain Devon and three crew members of the schooner Julian F. C. are missing after the vessel was struck by a hurricane off the Bird Islands on Tuesday night. The damaged ship, with torn jib and main sail, was reported dragging its anchor about 13 miles from Bird Island.
A district court answer and cross petition challenge trusteeship of Creston Christian Church and seek to dissolve a May injunction. The Reporter man with Mrs Hull and the Parsons couple from Creston took a two day trip from Leon to Geneseo Illinois covering about 250 miles. They noted widespread flood from eastern Iowa to western Illinois with rivers out of banks and many roads impassable. In Toulon Illinois they recorded 104 inches of rain in 22 hours and predicted heavy overall damage. The party planned further local trips before returning home.
Orient will observe Pumpkin Days Tuesday and Wednesday with a full two day program. Activities include ballgames Arbor Hill vs Williamson, dance, band music, athletic events, vaudeville, and farm product exhibits. A flock of chickens will be released from store buildings for visitors to catch, plus horseshoe pitching and a Ford obstacle race.

County agent L J Nickle reports Union County's Baby Beef club entered 8 calves at the Iowa state fair among 500 exhibitors. Six calves earned premiums, including eighth and ninth places in top classes. Herefords and roan Shorthorns shown by multiple members. The event drew praise as a major educational showcase for agriculture.
An express from Odessa to Moscow derailed 200 miles from Odessa. Forty passengers were killed and many injured when a track break, allegedly torn from its bed, caused the train to derail at high speed. Relief trains were dispatched as officials awaited casualty figures.
An explosion in a southside Des Moines grocery trapped and wounded about twelve people, including several children and four employees. The blast ripped the first floor, filled the basement with fumes, and injured a nine year old girl Angela Schaff among others. the store operated by the Landingham Grocery Company. Police and soldiers aided in rescue as fumes cleared.
Plans for opening September 1 foresee the largest enrollment in the city's history as families move from rural areas to town schools. The district expands high school offerings including normal training and commercial work, with highly qualified staff and restructured grades to allow earlier entry for younger pupils.
Aug 28 Cedar Rapids meter reader Frank Pamensky of the city water works was burned in a gas explosion in a meter pit and is in critical condition. His partner Mike Munn also suffered burns but is expected to recover as rescuers quickly contained the blaze. The explosion followed a match strike igniting sewer gas in the pit.
Mr and Mrs C H Lininger and daughter Hagel have returned from a two week visit to relatives in Oklahoma. They toured large oil fields including the Burbank field with 1800 producing wells in two square miles. Lininger notes Kansas and Oklahoma crops are above average this year.
