Sinclair Refining Files Suit Over Three Cent Gas Tax

Des Moines Aug 23 Sinclair Refining company of Kansas City says the extra one cent on Iowa gasoline tax is illegal and will sue to void the three cent levy. It sent two tax payments to state treasurer R E Johnson. one for 38264.90 accepted, another 23774.37 objected as July 4 tax. The firm asks to withhold 29000 for refunds if the suit wins. The move follows legislative friction over the tax hike and adjournment delays.

Grand Jury Plans Jail Inspections For Creston Area

The district court grand jury impaneled by Judge A R Maxwell will inspect the Union county and city jail in Creston and the town jail Afiton this afternoon. Members named this morning include J W McCue and Thomas Bullock along with D O Thompson C D Wilson M W Henderson Fred Stroup and William Lininger. Investigations begin tomorrow and run the rest of the week.

Crops In North Good Manatrey Report From North Iowa

S H Manatrey reports grain looks good in northern Iowa and Minnesota after a five day fishing trip to Green Lake Minnesota with Mrs Manatrey and Mr and Mrs Charles Buxton. He notes heavy small grain, some fine corn but ahead to maturity, and good fish catches during the trip covering about 800 miles.

Creston Fair Sparks District Exposition Attendance Push

Creston opens a district exposition as Union county fair starts with 300 plus entries across agricultural floral livestock and home departments. Parking space for 10 000 cars is planned with extra fields if needed. Judging begins tomorrow for livestock and women’s departments while floricultural and horticultural judging starts Thursday. Fireworks nightly and band concerts plus racing and platform acts highlight the week with rain aiding dust control and a forecast of record attendance.

Lakeland pair Ruth Elders and George Hal Deman left at 7 40 a m in a Wayco airplane for Detroit to test a Stinson monoplane for a possible non stop New York to Paris flight. They plan refueling in Tallahassee and a Detroit stop to meet backers, with no definite take off date but aim to conclude arrangements by late September. Elders, a local beauty contest winner, appeared calm as she piloted the craft at takeoff.

Chaplin Divorce Costs Over One Million

In Los Angeles an interlocutory decree grants Charlie Chaplin's divorce from Lita Grey Chaplin. The settlement allocates 625000 to the wife, 200000 trust for two sons, 100000 in attorneys fees, 10000 for Mrs. Chaplin's expenses since November, and about 60000 for receivers' fees plus additional child support and expenses.

Adair County Club Teams For Fair Selected

Shirley Ayres and Ruth Ridler of Grove township girls club will represent Adair county as the girls demonstration team at the state fair in Des Moines. Edith Barker chose them. Carl Mensing Harold Childs Edward Molin and Gail Schaffer were named the Adair county boys judging team for the state fair after a judging contest in Ames on Aug 20. Twelve boys will show 15 calves in baby beef classes and four boys will show 11 pigs in pig club classes.

Dismiss Petition For Citizenship For Hansen

The naturalization petition of Carl Christian Hansen a farmer near Aplle? Arispe was dismissed in district court yesterday by Judge A R Maxwell. Citizenship was granted to Mr and Mrs Jens Sorensen of Thayer and Wilfred Fielding How of Shannon City who took the oath of allegiance. Hansen's petition was in order but he failed to appear for examination, the third time he missed, leading to the dismissal.

County offices and banks to close for staff union meeting

County offices in the courthouse and all Creston banks will close Wednesday and Thursday after noons. The closures enable employees to attend the Union county staff meeting. A number of stores including groceries plan Thursday afternoon closures and several will close both Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
