A fierce storm battered eastern Iowa causing widespread flooding and crop losses. Two farmers, J. M. Schley and DeWitt Barrett near Bertram, drowned while searching for cattle as Big Creek overflowed and farms suffered severe inundation.
Rescuers toiled through the night as Walnut Creek overflowed in On IA causing all homes to flood. Rescue parties moved families by boat and wagon while a heavy rain continued. The town faced widespread loss with livestock drowned and poultry killed.
The Mississippi River rose eight inches in an hour as heavy rain drenched the area. Two and two tenths inches fell in 24 hours ending at 7 am with continued showers and a morning gale. Corn fields suffered extensive damage, trees were blown down, creeks overflowed, and crops overall were hurt.
Rainfall totaling 1.46 inches in 24 hours isolated several homes in Waterloo's northwest as Blackhawk creek overflowed. Cedar river remains near seasonal high, still rising. August rainfall in the area totals 4.96 inches with extensive property damage expected.
The Clinton Davenport and Muscatine interurban line between Clinton and Davenport was abandoned this morning due to washouts in the lowlands. Northwestern Railway main line trains are detoured on the Milwaukee lines via Savanna due to washouts west of Clinton.

Los Angeles Aug 19 ex pugilist Kid McCoy held on suspicion of murder in the death of Mrs Therese W Mors last Tuesday night. Alienists declared him sane yesterday but detectives say he is actually off his head and cracking under strain. A special guard guards his cell as he mumbles and tapes wall fragments. District Attorney Asa Keyes plans to present the case to the county grand jury, insisting McCoy will be indicted and was not insane the night of the shooting, merely drunk.
Grand and petit jurors for the September term of the United States court in Creston were prepared this morning by N F Reed of Des Moines court clerk and resident jury commissioner The lists include 30 grand jurors and 45 petit jurors chosen from Adair Adama Clarke Lucas Fremont Page Taylor Decatur and Wayne counties
