Two Murderers Escape from Allegheny County Jail in Pittsburgh
In Pittsburgh on August 18 two convicted murderers shot their way out of the downtown Allegheny County jail after obtaining keys from a bookkeeper. They wounded guards Harry Riger and John Hanlon. The escaped pair were Paul Jaworski, linked to the Coverdale armored car job, and John Basbinder, jailed for murdering a man in McKeesport over a loan dispute.
