Lincoln Aug 17 Donald Ringer 19 the youngest Nebraskan to receive the death sentence today won his long battle for life when the Nebraska board of pardons commuted his sentence to life imprisonment. The board stipulated no further commutation or parole ever. Ringer was accused of the 1924 robbery and murder of Carl Moore Hastings automobile salesman. His companion George Bender has never been apprehended. The pleas of his estranged mother father and Leta 16 and last minute interventions influenced the decision. Ringer denied all five confessions and asked for a fair deal just once in my life. He awaited the board’s decision on death row with his fourth respite expiring.

Davenport Iowa August 17 lighted harbor fire destroyed the river steamer Keokuk owned by Carnival City Packet company of Davenport three miles west of Davenport at 1 am. The vessel formerly operated between Burlington and Quincy with Walter A Blair as manager. Idle since 1924 the Keokuk once cost over 100000 and had a present value about 35000. The amount of the loss is not yet known.
