The wage scale is ready for signatures by coal operators and strike leaders. Mines may reopen Wednesday with the scale in effect, and the contract runs to April 1 next. An advisory committee and a fact finding panel will be formed, and meetings with operators proceed in Cleveland in October.
James Lacine a wealthy Iowa City farmer was fined 100 dollars and costs in Police court on charges of being drunk and disorderly and for beating his wife. Mrs Lacine remains in the city hospital in serious condition. State likely to press further charges.
Fort Madison Iowa August 15 A Negro life prisoner James Rowland escaped from the state penitentiary Saturday night and plunged into the Mississippi River. His body was recovered. Rowland had been sentenced from Keokuk for drowning his wife.
Council Bluffs Iowa reports the death of Charles C. West age 68 a water department employee who shot himself today. Authorities note domestic trouble as a hinted cause in the self inflicted death.
Frank Zillisca of Lyle Mincis and W J Ross of Keokuk were assaulted at a strikers benefit dance in Burlington Iowa. Zillisca is a Burlington round house employee and Ross a railroad laborer. The assailants were described as alleged strikers who beat and abused the two men during the event.
Chicago weather indicates fair tonight with warmer conditions in the extreme northeast portion. Tuesday is expected to be fair and continue warm.
Over past 24 hours readings show a range from 57 to 82 degrees. Rain amounts reported include .09 inches on Thursday and .01 inches on Friday. Temperature at 1 pm today stood at 84 degrees.

Boone Iowa August 15 Conductor George Cassie a well known Chicago Northwestern Railroad employee was killed this morning while acting as a brakeman during the strike He stubbed his toe and fell beneath the wheels in the yards according to Associated Press reports.

Des Moines Iowa August 15 No matter what the outcome of the Cleveland settlement or the coal strike there will be no coal rattling down chutes in Iowa for several weeks it was stated by President Smith of the Iowa operators here today If the Iowa operators accept the settlement two weeks will be required to clean up the mines and get them in shape for production he asserted.
Mrs. Mary Swartz of 210 East Union Street sent in a note about twin apples growing on a single stem in her yard. Attorney R N Johnston was named as assignee.Liabilities total 2724 dollars and the largest creditor is Levis Zukoski of St Louis with 1875 dollars due.
Roane Iowa Aug 15 An Associated story reports Vallie J Valle 22 of Morwenler Va. killed three miles west of Bell Plaine by a Chicago Northwestern train while asleep on the rails. He carried a card reading In case of accident 7 M Phillips Strangler Pa and had a photo in his pocket.
Butte Montana Aug 1 butte policeman Protine aged 98 who courted a 64 year old former circus rider and drew local attention died this afternoon. He claimed to have guarded President Lincoln during the war and wore his police uniform and badge until illness began a day or two ago. He had recently obtained a marriage license before travel complications led to the matter being dropped.
Funeral services for Levy Mayer, noted Chicago lawyer, will await the return of Mrs. Mayer and daughter from Paris. Mayer was found dead in his hotel room and death was attributed to cerebral hemorrhage after a conference of arrangers.
