The Philadelphia mint will issue bronz medallions memorializing Warren G Harding. One side bears his portrait, the other his birth and death dates, priced at 1.52 dollars, to be sold to the public.
The clearing house banks in New York report an excess reserve of 20,621,060 over the past five days, up by 4,396,690 from the previous week.
London reports Chancellor Guno submitted resignation to President Eb ert, but the president refused to accept it. Central News dispatch notes the move coming amid political tension and unclear next steps for the government.
Des Moines reports J. D. Mannning of the University of South Dakota has been hired as wrestling coach for Le Mars high school. The district plans to establish wrestling as a recognized sport this winter under F. H. Gilliland, director of athletics, with bright prospects for a creditable team.
Chicago reports for the next twenty four hours partly cloudy skies with scattered thunder showers and a cooler Sunday. Washington outlook for the week ahead predicts generally fair conditions with occasional local thunder showers and normal temperatures.
Past 24 hours ending 7 a.m. records show temperature range, precipitation amounts, wind directions and speeds, humidity levels, and barometric pressure from multiple stations in the area. Data indicate cooler overnight temperatures with light rainfall in portions of the region.
Refeld, Germany, Aug 11. During the food and currency revolt here four were killed and thirty were wounded. Several are expected to die.
In the Berea neighborhood twelve miles northwest of Fontanelle two young girls drowned in the Nodaway river while a 40 year old man died from exhaustion after hours in cold water searching for the bodies. Helen Weaver thirteen and Claire Caddock eleven were the victims. The girls waded in shallow water and stepped from the bank into deep water. neither could swim and their bodies were recovered late in the evening.
Cedar Rapids Aug 11 The Amana colony a center of industry now lies in ruins after a devastating blaze driven by strong winds. The elevator and woolen mill were first to burn, firemen from Cedar Rapids and others rushed to help, but communications failed as wires went down and the town faced total evacuation risk.
Gus Schwab seeks district court relief to untangle Felix W. Hendrick finances plus collect $14 580 in mortgage and interest. He claims $9 420 55 due. W L Reed files to recover $700 from W E Seeley backed by a note.
Ada Russell departed this morning for Greenfield where she will stay for a few days visiting local sights and friends.
Governor W. H. McMaster said South Dakota will receive 160000 gallons of gasoline bought in Chicago and sent to nine cities at 16 cents a gallon. The fuel was shipped to Marion during services for President Harding.
Half the town watched the first detachment of the Illinois national guards enter Hillsboro to guard striking employees of the Zinc company. There were no disturbances reported but one man was shot in a riot yesterday.
In Eberbachbaden Germany on August 11 a draft evader identified as G C Bergdoll shot and killed one man and wounded another after being seized in a hotel room efforts shown to have concealed Bergdoll and attempted to seize him.
Berlin reports a critical food situation with prices beyond reach of working men. Workers receive worthless paper marks, and analysts see Bolshevik propaganda influence amid economic turmoil.
In Herlin Germany on August 11 eleven people were killed with many more injured after clashes between striking workers and peasants. The peasants formed a self defense army and repelled the strikers who tried to seize food and crops.
In county records four women filed divorce, child custody, and alimony petitions. Madge Fitch seeks divorce with custody of one child and costs. Ida B Krise seeks divorce from Charles E Krise with $25 monthly alimony and child custody and $190 temporary alimony. Madge Cain pursues divorce from Paul Cain. petitions note prior marriages and separations along with claims of neglect and cruelty.
CM Akes, well known in Leon and the Eighth Congressional district, died at his home from heart trouble. A breeder and dealer in purebred Hereford cattle, he aided farmers in several counties and played a leading role in local Republican politics. Funeral at the Methodist church in Leon tomorrow at 3 30 p m with many expected to attend.
Agnes Boham seeks a legal separation from H. E. Boham claiming a diseased husband and desertion after their Clarion marriage on September 27, 1921. She asks at least 60 per month for her and her child plus temporary alimony of 100, noting her Creston store work and her husband’s earning power.
Ben Arnold left for Ames Iowa today staying until Monday. Mrs Charles Schofield and Kent residents were in town shopping. Marshall McCann Red Oak visited with parents Friday. A Fluckey Afton attended to business today. Roy Hazen Lincoln Township came Friday for shopping. Mrs Ernest Krouse Aurora visiting Catherine Chandler. Quackenbush Bloomfield business trip ended Friday. Barbara West returned from Sunnycrest Sanatorium Dubuque for vacation with parents. Brezeale Trierweiler families from Aurora Illinois traveled to Creston to visit Mrs Chandler.
The Standard Oil Company of Indiana announced a gasoline price cut to 16 cents per gallon following a South Dakota governor’s action on August 7. Governors of Nebraska and Iowa were weighing or seeking similar reductions, while Iowa stations had not yet lowered prices. Local dealers reported a 23.1 cent rate in Des Moines and no current change locally.
Loyal Curry was brought to the city jail for an interview on sobriety. Officer Seeley escorted him to the city building. Curry slipped away at the rear door during a phone call and remains at large as authorities search for him.
William Dahm Jr. of Red Oak, age thirteen, visits his grandmother near the city and displays exceptional golf skill at Creston links, reportedly finishing rounds at Red Oak course in 45 minutes and drawing interest as one of the city’s best young players.
William Grier aged 48 and Frank Horak aged 40 were struck and killed by a bolt of lightning while under a tree in St. Clair Park Cedar Rapids Iowa early today. The deaths were reported by local authorities and pinned to the storm that swept the area. The incident occurred around dawn and left investigators to determine if others were injured.
