Twenty firefighters were overcome and $15,000 damage caused in the Bowen Furniture Co. blaze in downtown Omaha. Rescue efforts involved police patrols, citizens, and detectives. Assistant Fire Chief Dineen led repeated forays into smoke before being carried out.
Washington Aug 11 Chairman Cummins of the Interstate Commerce Commission said legislation is under consideration to empower the President to seize railroad systems. He denied being instructed by the President to draft the bill.
A catboat overturned in New York harbor after an on board explosion off Port Richmond Staten Island. Four or five crew members were killed in the incident reported by the Associated Press.
The forecast calls for thunder showers this afternoon or tonight in the east portion. Saturday will be fair with warmer temperatures, especially in the extreme southeast portion.

In Coffeyville Kansas on August 11 Victor Bennett age 12 was found dead with a broken neck in a Bennett farm pasture. A horse nearby also lay with a broken neck and rope ends tied to both animals. authorities believe the horse bolted, causing the boy to die and the horse to crash into a tree.
Des Moines report states Frank McDonnell, part owner of McDonnell Boiler Works and former circus trainer, shot himself in the chest with an indelible pencil line drawn around his heart. Doctors say there is no chance of recovery. no motive is known.
Danger to Petrograd water supply from cholera was averted by American relief workers who purified water sources with fifty tons of lime chloride. By July 25 thousands had been inoculated, but the cholera threat is now negligible.

Heads of seventeen railroad labor organizations met to discuss President Harding's strike proposal. After two hours no tangible results were reported, and shopmen leaders remained firm on keeping their existing seniority when workers return to duty.
Heads of 148 American railroads met in New York on August 11 to appoint a committee to draft a response to President Harding’s railroad proposals. The exact nature of the reply or whether the seniority issue would go to the Labor Board was not disclosed. Haley Fiske of Metropolitan Life Insurance, a major railroad securities holder, arrived with an important message.

Jefferson City Mo August 11 Bruce Miller 18 or 19 was paroled today by Gov Hyde after being sentenced to two years in the penitentiary as an accessory in a Benton county robbery. The trial listed his age as 19.

Mrs. D. Dean of Marion escaped with only a small scratch when a runaway team crashed into her buggy and knocked her to the pavement in Cedar Rapids, Aug. The single tree broke on a hay rack driven by Linn county farmer Geo Alexander. Gus Selig of Marion was injured, possibly fatally, when struck by an automobile driven by Fred Sies of Cedar Rapids. Selig suffered internal injuries and lacerations to his body and head.
Paris reports from London that Germany will receive a moratorium on debt payments. The Associated Press dispatch notes the decision as part of the financial relief efforts.
London reports King George signed the ratified Washington treaties today. The document now goes to Washington for exchange of ratifications.
Leonard Manning was killed when he fell under the wheels of a passing motor truck in Clinton Indiana. The accident was reported by Associated Press.
Thieves broke into the S. L. Collings Oil company warehouse on Shenandoah Junction Avenue and stole a supply of gasoline. The amount is unknown pending month end audit. Attempts were made to other stations that same night where no supply was taken.
