Men’s Work talks, prayers, community services, and club meetings fill the September schedule along with a Florida trip, a garden cake sale, and Stitch and Chatter activities. Obituary notes report Caroline M. Reid’s death with family survivors and funeral arrangements.
The local W C T U reports thirty two new members bringing total to one hundred with fourteen honorary. The growth signals strong community interest in the organization amid Cranbury’s civic life. A doggie roast and theatre party followed a Cranbury group gathering. Attendees included Mary Symmes and guests from Freehold Dutch Neck Marlboro Tennent Philadelphia.
Miss Anna L Updike announces her engagement to Philip M Chamberlin at a South Main Street gathering in Hightstown. Guests including Eleanore Mount Helen Applegate Gladys Applegate Roberta Dey Elma Black Lillian Perrine Margaret Mason Isabelle Perrine Margaret Chamberlin Lydia Dey Eleanore Grover Helen Wilson Kathryn Updike Florence Updike Mrs Stanley Stults Lucille Chamberlin Cranbury and Ethel Hutchinson Robbinsville attended the sewing party with music and a small crepe paper basket notice.
The Middlesex County Jury Commission filed the September term grand and petit jury lists with the county clerk. The term begins September 16 with drawing about ten days earlier. Grand jurors include residents from Cranbury, Jamesburg, Monroe, Plainsboro, and South Brunswick townships. petit jurors list names from the same towns plus Beekman and Dey.
Mike Murphy of Plainsboro aided farmer Thomas Martin in stopping three thieves loading a three ton truck with potatoes. After a pursuit to Trenton, Murphy helped have the trio arrested, earning praise from Martin and friends.
Plans have been completed for a greeting as September 7 opens what may be one of the largest enrollments at Rider College of Trenton New Jersey. Shorthand and typing remain popular while Commercial Spanish and new courses in sales and advertising draw students. Catalogs for the 56th fall term are ready on request.
Three people were arrested in connection with potato thefts from farms near Allentown. Lynn Theriiault and wife Myrtle, both of 442 Garfield Avenue, Trenton, plus John Dayton of 167 Walnut Avenue, Trenton, were turned over to Monmouth county authorities. The arrests followed a pursuit by local officers and a gunfire exchange after the farm theft was spotted on the Imlaystown road. Bail was set at 800 dollars each.
Cranbury Fire Company hosts a band concert and block dance on Saturday evening September 4 with music by Goodwins Band inviting all to attend for a good time.
John T. Mershon died in Dayton on Friday September 3 on his eighty fifth birthday. He is survived by four sons Wm Mershon Dayton Harvey H Mershon Monmouth Junction Charles E Mershon Kingston Lewis D Mershon Dayton and one daughter Mrs H W Updyke Dutch Neck. Funeral from Lewis D Mershon Dayton Sunday at 2 PM with services at Dayton Presbyterian Church at 2 80 PM Tendered Farewell. The Sunday School class of three Mary Mount gave Roger Stanton a farewell party at his Hightstown home as he moves with his parents Rev and Mrs William A Stanton to Pittsburgh Pa within weeks. Dr Stanton resigned as pastor of the local Baptist Church to lead the Western Pennsylvania Orphanage at Pittsburgh.
Director Roberts for Bergen County Freeholders pushes a bill in Trenton to raise motor vehicle license revenue from 1.9 million to about 3.5 million. He notes a 20 percent rise in passenger car and truck registration fees would yield only 380 thousand, leaving 1.044 million from drivers licenses and other licenses to fund roads. He urges legislators to support a broader increase for state and county road funding.
