Canadian roads haul far more goods than US roads

A Treasury Department statement shows in 1893 Canadian roads carried 10 966 loaded cars containing about 209 000 tons of goods hauled from one Canadian point to another while in 1897 American roads moved 460 209 loaded cars weighing 6 637 173 tons. This indicates American goods hauled by Canadian roads were roughly twenty seven times the volume of Canadian goods hauled by American roads.
