Bennington Boiler Explosions Kill Crew In Harbor
The gunboat Bennington suffered two boiler explosions in San Diego harbor killing Lieutenant Newman K. Perry Jr. and at least thirty nine crewmen instantly with over sixty injured. The blasts tore through boiler rooms, blew decks, and beached the ship while it prepared to sail to Mare Island. Rescue teams boarded from De Russe and other boats as hospitals filled and local homes sheltered the wounded. Authorities traced the cause to fifteen year old boilers, retubed in 1903, with repairs noted as not immediately urgent.
