Old Superstitions and Odd Tales From the Lakes and West
A collage of anecdotes on sea superstitions about rats predicting shipwrecks, eerie lake wrecks like the Vernon and Idaho, and the belief that vermin sense unsafe timbers. It also recalls Sierra forest life with abundant wildlife, punctual Mr Scott in England, a famed collection of opera hats, a curious Chinese claim about orange pulp, a blunt clergy marriage sermon, and a note on singing by faith.

Mexican Money Evolution Before Early Caye Trade
Before Spanish conquest Mexicans used cacao beans as currency with larger beans saved for liquor. By 1585 Castilian coins appeared in small quantities but were inadequate for trade. A royal decree prompted minting silver coins whose weight determined value, giving rise to the peso. Eventually copper and gold coins circulated, but fraud led to three royal mints in San Luis, Santa Fe, and Mexico City, with copper coins for San Domingo. Minting moved from the Marquis del Valle building to the council house and Viceroyal Palace, then to the Apartado Building in 1778 and stayed on. From independence to 1847 the mint was leased to private parties to supply states lacking mints.
