Review of Major Smith Coward ruling at New York court
Arguments were heard before Justice Gleg erich on Major Clinton H. Smith of the Seventy first regiment appealing a military court decision branding him a coward. The case centers on the power of Governor Roosevelt to appoint a court of inquiry and whether the board's findings allow a review. The Seventy first regimental duty at San Juan Hill is cited in defense, while the state contends the board aimed to vilify officers. The judge reserved decision after exchanges between Major Smith and Mr Coyne, with Colonel Bacon defending the regiment and criticizing governor and press contrasts.
