Mortgage and Mary Wayne's Choice on a Farm

A distressed year unfolds on the Wayne farm as Josiah and Martha fear losing their home to Deacon Tall's mortgage demands while Mary Wayne, a schoolteacher and hoped helper, contemplates marriage to Matt Mott amid the shadow of the city’s fortune chase and a stern family test of faith. Mary's devotion to her parents contrasts with Matt's city roots and the Wayne family's strict insistence on Christian virtue, setting a tension between dependence on divine providence and pursuit of a life in the metropolis.

Thanksgiving, Forgiveness, and a Family Homecoming

The Wayne family reunites after estrangement when Mary and her husband John return to the old farm. The father recalls past harsh words, forgives, and helps pay the mortgage as Mary’s husband becomes a son to the family. A quiet Thanksgiving ends with gratitude and a healing gesture.

Safety device tests on railroad line hailed as future invention

Mount Holly reports a new safety device by O H Wickman of New York tested along the Pemberton and Hightstown railroad. If successful, it would let a station agent stop a train and contact the engineer anywhere on the track. Frank Ferro of New York leads the construction, backed by Hugo Doof, a New York lace importer. The public awaits final test results and fuller details.
