Cranbrook sends thirty men with the 107th Regiment to Victoria for training in fast shooting. A Sunday sendoff drew about two thousand locals despite heavy rain. The community honored the volunteers with music, speeches, and a farewell concert at Edison Theatre.
A large audience attended Knox Presbyterian Church where Rev J A Clark of Calgary lectured on The Marvellous Story of Joan of Arc. He praised Joan as an inspiring figure who heard visions in youth and led France to victory, noting no other deeds match hers. The event lasted about an hour with an anthem and violin and vocal ensembles closing the program. Victoria B C Nov 3 Kootenay and Boundary send 250 strong to Canada’s second contingent, arriving and proceeding to camp. They join 500 local regiments and 250 more expected, forming a 1000‑strong battalion at the concentration camp site. Cranbrook officers and 107th regiment thank Cranbrook and Nelson residents for their support as they depart for Victo ria.
The Cranbrook Women’s Institute held its regular meeting in Maple Hall with president Mrs Seaman in chair. Members and visitors attended as Mrs John Shaw demonstrated shortbread making, followed by a solo from Mrs R W Russell. A social evening to mark the branch anniversary was planned, with details to be announced next week. Tea included shortbread. The meeting closed with the National Anthem.
Cranbrook citizens will see The Minister's Bride a four act comedy by Knox Presbyterian Ladies Aid on Monday November 1 at the Auditorium theater. Local talent will provide musical numbers and half the proceeds go to Belgian relief. Goods for Belgians will be bought from local merchants and shipped to Belgium.
Democratic leaders in Washington claim a substantial house majority and an enlarged senate majority after the elections. They state the senate could rise from ten to fifteen seats, while the house majority of about 120 may have slipped slightly, and express satisfaction with the overall result.
Cranbrook residents mourn the death of 52 year old 7.8 C Fraser who died in Toronto Ontario. A frequent Cranbrook visitor and longtime Bank of Montreal manager in Rossland he was a well known figure in the West Kootenay district.
Saratoga N Y Nov 4 F A Hojnge former owner of vast copper interests died suddenly here tonight. Heinze once controlled major copper holdings and was a noted industrial magnate.
Montreal business dispute centers on W. H. Scroggle Ltd the citys largest dry goods store facing a demand of 364.55 from Stewart and MacDonald. John D. Rob, formerly C7.11 advertising agent, acted as liquidator. Reported mobilities total about 700000.
Montreal reports an anonymous letter claiming half a million Germans in America plan a raid on Canada. Mayor Martin forwarded the letter to police. similar warnings reached Westmount officials. Toronto police coordinate with military to counter suspected alien involvement after a Grand Trunk subway disturbance.
Calgary records a six inch snowfall while residents Geoffrey Parker and Martin Crystal join the second Canadian contingent and others return from prairie holidays. The Canada Gazette reports on rescinding the War Measures Act and patent license adjustments for wartime production in Canada.
Mr G W Scott of the Imperial Bank of Canada staff was thrown from a horse and fractured the lower left leg. Ten recruits left the district to train in Victoria B C to join the second Canadian contingent, including F James B Hane key, God frey Vigne, and Horace Jones. The District Farmers' Institute subscribed 28 dollars to the Patriotic Fund.
Tough issues on British Columbia lumber exports dominated the Victorian board of trade quarterly gathering. E J Palmer J O Cameron and H R McMillan spoke on causes of the slump and possible remedies including a memorial to document export facts and seek preferential markets.

New York dispatch reports a major British naval reverse off Chile as five German cruisers attack. Monmouth with 655 crew is said sunk, Good Hope last seen afire, Glasgow believed damaged but reaching port. German vessels Gneisenau Scharnhorst Nürnberg Leipzig and Bremen featured. Leipzig and Bremen reportedly missing.
George H Prince district forester for the provincial forestry department married Minnie Dayton on October 28 in Fredericton. The ceremony, performed by Rev Thomas Marshall with Rev FL H Prince assisting, united two Cranbrook connections as Prince heads to Nelson for their future home.
London official notice declares wartime state between Britain and Turkey. The announcement states a formal break in relations and armed hostilities have begun, with military implications unfolding across alliance lines and regional theaters.

New York November 4 Robert Bacon former secretary of state issued a statement before sailing for England asserting that Germany breached a Hague treaty with the United States by violating Belgian neutrality. He questioned why the U S would stay silent and warned against treating the Hague conventions as scraps of paper.
London reports the German cruiser Yorck of 9,350 tons with 683 crew struck a mine in Jad bay and sank. Built 1905, it was the largest German warship lost so far in the war, armed with multiple heavy guns and crew, and likely sunk by a mine from German waters near Wilhelmshaven.
