Work began Thursday on Cranbrook’s new Fernie Construction school building to be completed by September 15. The 10 by 85 foot two story brick structure will offer ten classrooms with modern ventilation and a septic system. The project includes a clerk of the works and nearby houses see ongoing additions and moves to improve property and reduce fire risk.
The Western Branch of the Canadian Mining Institute will hold its fifth general meeting at Coleman Alberta on Tuesday May 25 1909. All good standing western members are also members of the Western Branch. Members are urged to attend and to provide papers or notes for reading and discussion, and to notify the secretary of their intention. ri Jacobs Secretary of Western Branch. The Queens Hotel Calgary Alberta is a popular western stopover run by H L Stephens and James Stephens. It offers first class rooms beds meals and courteous service at reasonable prices and serves as Calgary headquarters for the East Kootenay contingent.
Automobilia notes show J. D. McBride’s new White Steamer in commission and P. Matheson’s Ford runabout, along with V. Hyde Bakers White Steamer and A. C. Bowness’ Spider Wheel machine. Roads are in good shape and automobile horns sound each evening on the streets.
John Reid district superintendent of government roads directs three gangs with one hundred men at work. Authorities anticipate a marked improvement on the roads during the coming summer due to Reid's proven expertise.
T. T. McVittie of McVittie & Parker has begun surveying a wagon road between Moyie and Kitchener for the government. The project will aid settlers by improving transport in the district. The BE BN railway is to build new terminals at Victoria with depot buildings a larger roundhouse workshop and coal bunkers on the waterfront.
Cranbrook locals report visitors, business ads, and sales notes including Campbell Manning bedding plants, furniture windows bargains, and a fire whistle found by City Clerk. Mentions Ethel Rook visiting Winnipeg, residents traveling to Lethbridge, and real estate activity by C P Bell. Local births, promotions, and trades are noted alongside trust-planting initiatives and the Cranbrook Board of Trade’s new station sign.
A quirky Cranbrook Chronicle item notes fires seem to come in threes in Cranbrook with the first on Cranbrook Street, the second at the school, and the third on Saturday morning in the restricted district. The piece jokes that fires always go in threes and hopes the next Trinity arrives after a long pause.
Cranbrook Base Cut Club met Thursday night at the Cranbrook wuwl. Officers elected include President W A Rollins and Secretary Treasurer Woy Math. Executive committee members named. Bonners Ferry to play Cranbrook May 24 and 25, with city aid discussion for grounds.
Last Monday public school resumed with all lasses except primary class. High school moved to government building then Curling rink and Presbyterian church Sunday school. Divisions 1 2 4 5 in rink rooms. Division 3 in church school. Temporary desks provided. primary class given a holiday. trustees praised for handling the disruption.
The City Council met Thursday in the council chamber with Acting Mayor Ryan and Aldermen Baker, Hunt, and Henderson present. Minutes were adopted, accounts approved, and bills from Electric Light, Water Supply, and Telephone Lines passed with the Acting Mayor and Alderman Baker not voting. The council approved hiring John Gault as consulting engineer for water and sewer projects. A $200 grant to Cranbrook Board of Trade was approved amid strong support. Discussions on telephone use at the fire hall were left to the fire chief. School construction matters, bylaw Nos. 62 and 63, and purchasing a five ton trolley and street sprinkler were approved before adjournment.
A large turnout in Cranbrook welcomed the Knights of Columbus as a new council formed locally. Delegates and visitors from Calgary, Lethbridge, Edmonton, Spokane, Seattle, and several Alberta towns attended a day of ceremonies, banquets, and speeches celebrating the order’s Catholic charitable mission and community hospitality.
Calgary’s Sykes, CPR dining and sleeping car superintendent, announced that dining cars will be on all trains. The Soo-Spokane-Portland diners move to CPR regulars, while CPR diners shift to Cranbrook Medicine Hat local. receivers praise CPR initiative.
Newspaper men from Eastern Washington Western Montana Northern Idaho and British Columbia formed the Inland Empire Press Association in Spokane. Officers include President Eugene Lorton Secretary Arthur Hooker and Treasurer C O Foreman with a large governing board from multiple cities and regions. A banquet followed and a YMCA building fund canvass in Victoria closed with 10019550 pledged.
