March Session of City Fathers Ends With Appointments

City council met at City Hall with Mayor Simon Taylor presiding. Treasurer J A Arnold resigns and T M Roberts appointed as clerk. city without engineer. Grants $600 to Cranbrook City Band for weekly summer concerts. Bills totaling hundreds are approved including city services, payrolls, and school board expenses. Finance notes visit by Fred Dean of a Toledo trust company eyeing debentures in western Canada towns. City engineer report presented.

Telephone Co plans new poles on Hanson Armstrong Norbury Kains Fenwick across several streets. no poles exist yet. Thawing costs for water services and hydrants are lower this season, with better equipment. Council discussed reappointing City Engineer O'Hara. votes tied and motion failed. A committee was formed to study purchasing Cranbrook Electric Light plant. City Treasurer J A Arnold resigned to become police magistrate. T M Roberts appointed city treasurer without salary.

Interesting Poultry Meeting Deliberates on Disease Import Controls

The March Poultry Association meeting at the Old Gym approved a resolution urging Dominion inspectors to tighten live poultry imports to curb disease spread in the province. Breeders near the coast discussed outbreaks from neighboring imports and a boys and girls competition on hatching and growing poultry was proposed with Mr. A. H. Webb overseeing details.

Alaska Railway Plan Moves Toward President’s Signature

The Alaska railway bill authorizes 1000 miles of government railroad at a cost of 35 million dollars. The Senate and House conference report was adopted, with President Wilson expected to sign upon receipt. Interior Department plans advance as Secretary Lane supports rapid construction once approved.

Board of Trade Eyes Cranbrook Line Charter Push

About fifty members met at city hall for Cranbrook Board of Trade annual session chaired by Darling. They backed a Kootenay Central spur to Cranbrook with CPR support and urged charters subsidies from governments after surveys and maps showed a feasible route under 0.8 percent grades, plus notes on regional development and rail access.

Hindoo Murders Reported Near Bull River

Two Hindoos were found murdered in an isolated shack near Bull River with gunshot and shoulder and chest wounds. Constable Minty led the inquest as five Hindoos were arrested and another fled into the hills amid limited local information. The killings appear to have occurred around one o'clock, several hours before discovery.

Dow resigns as Cranbrook Chief of Police

Mayor Simon Taylor and Alderman Hickenbottam accept the resignation of Chief Cory A. Dow effective April 1 1914. Percy Adams is named chief at 126 dollars per month. Dow, long a longtime officer, gave up duties after fourteen years in Cranbrook and Fernie. He may pursue other offers while remaining a CPR detective in the region. The board also orders supplies to be routed through the secretary, with trustees not liable for unsanctioned goods.

The Cranbrook District Agricultural Association announces special prizes for the Fall Fair. Steele-Briggs prizes include 6.00 cash for top exhibitor points and 40.00 35.00 80.00 awards for prize collections. Reports to Winnipeg by Oct 20, 1914. Also mercantile horse prizes with 15.00 and 10.00 awards for best teams and delivery horses.
