Grangrook hosts a Sunday meeting in the Auditor ium with over 400 attendees in a standing vote endorsing conscription. Speakers from civic, religious, and business groups urged support while stressing duty to Canada and the Empire.
Toby an Indian before Judge Arnold on remand was found guilty of being drunk and fined 10 dollars. A C Kerr pleaded guilty to selling liquor to an Indian and paid 50 dollars. Maurice McGregor convicted on common assault and insulting language fines 15 dollars on each charge or thirty days. prosecutor urged protection for lonely Cranbrook women.
Mrs Z Wo Spence argues worry harms more than work noting worry’s link to overwork and ill mental state. She contrasts worry with productive effort, stressing that sustained, moderate work renews energy while worry drains vitality and undermines health with no payoff.
Otto Gill appeared before stipendiary magistrate Arnold on a wilful wounding charge over cows owned by St. Eugene Hospital and Charles R. Shepherd. Evidence showed rifles used, but no link to Gill. magistrate dismissed. Emphasis on firearm safety and parental responsibility for youths under 16. Samuel D. Pumpelly a Civil War veteran and Grand Army man died at his home in Portland Oregon after a five week illness. He was born May 20 1841 near Amelia Kentucky enlisted at 19 in the 16th Kentucky infantry rising to captain and served under Sherman including the march to the sea where he was wounded at Resaca May 14 1864. He later lived in Minnesota and Oregon where he held county office and became known for mining interests in the St Marys prairie news notes from the Portland Evening Telegram via Mr Sam E Pumpelly son of the deceased.
