At a council meeting most aldermen supported a Y M C A proposal to add a gym and swimming pool to the Y building. Plans estimate 20000 to 30000 dollars with a city endorsement sought to galvanize CPR approval and a campaign to raise up to 10000 dollars.
William Wesley Moore and Ivy Woffington wed at the Baptist Church in a charming ceremony. Rev. W. T. Tapscott officiated. Woffington’s uncle and friends attended. Guests later joined a wedding breakfast at Harry Moore’s home before the couple departed for Vancouver and coast points.
Word arrives from Kimberley of the marriage of A. R. Lilly, a barrister with Herchmer Mitchell Lilly, to Miss Hilda Fordham of Halifax N S. The ceremony occurred June 9 in Nova Scotia. The couple began a honeymoon trip visiting Montreal Toronto Calgary and other stops before settling in Kimberley where they will reside. Lilly is well known in Cranbrook and Kimberley and friends send congratulations.
The Cranbrook Men's Conservative Association will hold its annual meeting on June 28 at K.P. Hall at 8 p.m. to appoint officers and conduct general business. At 9 p.m. the Cranbrook Electoral District Association will convene for the same purpose, expected to be well attended and enthusiastic.
A works committee report detailed damage costs estimated at 1411 dollars. The document notes quantities of material moved and is continued on page four.
A Wednesday lacrosse match at the Recreation grounds drew a large crowd despite threatening weather. The fathers clashed with their sons in a spirited 3 to 0 victory for the boys, with periods disrupted by injuries and enlistments for other duties.
Western Canada produced its first locally built engine on April 20 at the Canadian National Railways Transcon Shops in Winnipeg. Engine 2747, a 38 percent freight engine weighing 198 tons with fuel saving devices, will haul main line time freights in the Alberta district after trials. A sister engine, 2748, is under construction at Transcona and due in Alberta in May.
The original line-up featured Geo Simpson Gib Sinclair Ashton Powers and Archie Leith. Burly Willis earned the long distance honor after a full game effort while Art Wallace trained. Bill Barber and Bob Moffatt served two minutes each in the penalty box for alleged rule violations.
Special despatch reports a Cincinnati train No 40 collision with Washington Express No 60 near Blaairville late at night. At least eighteen people killed with nine bodies found in the Cleveland Sleeper of No 50. Three trainmen among the dead.
M. P. DeWolfe of Bonner's Ferry died at 3 a.m. after a three month stay in St. Eugenie Hospital. He was 76 and is survived by his wife and son Alan DeWolfe of this city.
The Cranbrook Assembly Native Sons of Canada No 22 held a regular Kimberley meeting in Odd Fellows Hall with about thirty new members initiated. Officers were in place, a lunch followed, and plans considered for biweekly Kimberley gatherings with a celebratory dance. President Dr Rutledge praised progress and Canada’s national spirit, urging unity under the British flag and July 1 commemorations. James Martin spoke on the order’s aims, addressing misconceptions and stressing harmony and civic unity for native and foreign-born Canadians.
Kimberley’s growing pupil population prompts a planned fourth four room addition to the public school. Since 1911 the facility expanded from seven pupils to near four hundred in 1913, with multiple building phases and new teachers. Principal Jos. Morsh notes ongoing development and district support.
Mrs E Ryckman sails July 1 from Quebec on the Montclairn to tour England Ireland Scotland and Wales. She travels with a CP guided party, stays at the Cecil London, uses top transport and has gratuities arranged, with friends wishing a pleasant journey.
National League games saw Pittsburgh and Boston 3 Chicago 4 and Philadelphia 1 American League Chicago 4 Washington 2. British Soccer team Vancouver defeated B C Mainland 5 1. A Canadian lodge meeting featured initiation of Dr Tiffin and a native daughter presented. officers included Dr J W Rutledge president and M Gilli 1st vice president. The program listed orchestral selections songs and addresses by Dr Rutledge W Herchmer Dick Burke and others.
Tea will be served Saturday by Mrs. MacKenzie and Miss Home. Tuesday tea substitutes for luncheon as Steyles Cup is played. Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Green hold tea table duties. Wilon Cup semi finals set with Mrs. Beale versus Mrs. Forrest and Mrs. Meighen to face the winner of Mrs. McCreery versus Miss Greaves.
The Great War Veterans Association sold their Cranbrook Street property, the former Royal Hotel, to George Tater. The city set a five thousand dollar price to facilitate transfer, with the GWV A to receive between five and six thousand dollars. The veterans will remain in occupation until August and will repurpose the T. S. Gill building as a club.
The board held its Friday meeting with full attendance led by chairman F H Dezall. They discussed Dominion Day flag raising with Native Sons and prizes for essays, then denied salary increase requests for several teachers. Miss Edith Weight resigned from Central School, and Miss M J Rice sought a transfer and raise. The piece notes overhead costs and repairs, plus the soldiers monument location at G W V A grounds.
