The Moral and Social Reform Council held a well attended meeting Friday. The committee chaired by J Armstrong presented a constitution draft adopted with slight changes. Other matters were discussed and will be public soon. Next meeting set for Saturday at 8 30 in the courthouse.
The Alberta provincial exhibition in Calgary will be carnival week with the W Parker shows opening Monday July 1. The Path of Pleasure branding promises a large open air program plus paid attractions including trained animals, Broadway Belles vaudeville, a Ferris wheel, and a big carry-Us-all. The lineup highlights Beno balancing trapeze Al Zare Japanese wire and the Lapios double high dive among others in a grand tented exhibition noted for safety and comfort.
Premier Mc Bride says negotiations with Canadian Northern aim to acquire terminals on the mainland and Vancouver Island. Reported site near Quatsito Sound rumored. Construction presses ahead as the company vows Pacific seaboard access before GTP completion.
The sitting of the Supreme Court of British Columbia scheduled to open in Fernie today has been adjourned until the first.
The Ladies Aid of the Methodist church hosts a lawn social next Wednesday June 16 featuring a grand balloon ascension from the grounds at dusk. Tea cream and other refreshments will be served and a large crowd is expected if weather stays favorable. The event occurs on the Epworth League Lawn Tennis grounds on Armiston Avenue with a musical program and nominations planned.
The City band directed by Banmaster F Corrison presents a Monday evening program including Thy Gingerbread Cadets Love's Devotion Love's Old Sweet Song Latest Hits From New York and Detroit Lampe Southern Beatties Rose My Pretty Rose Danmark Intermezzo Ivanhoe Moon God Save the King and other selections.

In British Columbia’s Windermere valley from Golden to Fort Steele, H J Haffner of the Columbia Valley Irrigation company notes a mild dry climate and rising settlement. Development includes opened Paradise and Ptarmigan mines with $500000 spent, orchards and crops, improving roads, and rail surveys near Golden with Kootenay Central railway expansion planned. Contracts for construction may be let once surveys near completion and irrigation plans proceed.
A report by Consul Hale predicts 75 000 to 100 000 Americans will settle in Western Canada this year. Wealth from new settlers will reach millions and more than 200 000 homesteads have been granted. Dominion population grows by over 1 000 000 with grain output rising about 100 000 000. Remaining homestead land includes 17 826 000 acres in Manitoba, 104 878 000 in Saskatchewan, and 117 869 000 in Alberta.
About forty boys lined up Monday evening for a fine drill led by Captain Tlughes with Sergeant Crooks at the front. Spectators applauded as the company passed, then ice cream was served by Hand of Hope ladies. Plans are set for a week of camping and hard drill in the hot days ahead.

Jack Scott longtime chief dispatcher for the CPR in Cranbrook is transferred to Souris Manitoba. Mrs Scott grew up in Cranbrook and the couple are beloved locals who will be missed by a large circle of friends and business acquaintances.

Fernie district readers hear rumors of Black Hand activity again. Police, led by Chief Burroughs and Constable Gorman, captured a man identified as Joseph Raniera in Coal Creek shack. he faced concealed weapon charges for thirty days and later escaped jail during a meal. He was recaptured near Elko and brought back by train.
Robert Aikins moves stock from the Palm on Baker Street to the new Palm beside the Auditorium as his confectionery business grows. The opening is next Saturday with music in the afternoon and evening to celebrate the larger quarters and expanded ice cream parlors.
Dominion Ecological Survey leader J. Schofield arrives in the city to begin mapping East Kootenay with Cranbrook as his headquarters and base of supplies. He will employ only local men aside from his chief assistant.
Corpus Christi observance will be held at St Eugene Mission next Sunday June 13 with high mass at 10 a.m. and a 2 30 p m procession of the blessed sacrament. The event draws nearly all Hast RopEsnAy Indians to participate.
The Edison theater shows busy crowds with popular features. U. S. Championship Baseball Match 1908, Beauty and the Beast, and The Ambulance Dogs head the bill, with well rendered songs and favorable reception.
The Cranbrook Juniors beat the C P R shop apprentices 8 to 6 with Stewart and Kerr as batters for the Juniors and McNeil and Cuttler for the C P R. A return match is planned for next Wednesday evening. A Moyie versus Cranbrook game is set for Saturday the 12th at 6 30 on the lower grounds with no admission but a collection.
The Cranbrook fat men lost to Fernie in Fernie last evening. Players included Hogarth Sheldon Yeandleillipps Mead Leitch Rollins McKenzie Fink. Cranbrook supporters traveled with Cryderman Pinkham Turley Elmer CoMn Small Thompson Bowness. A follow up match is planned in Cranbrook against a team organized by M. B. King and J. Bates.
Fort Steele will celebrate on July 1 with horse races and other sports. Good purses and prizes will be hung up. The old burg will wear gala attire as locals gamble on a good time at Fort Steele.

A special council meeting convened Tuesday evening in the Council Chamber with Mayor Pink and Aldermen Baner Ryan Jackson Jolson and Henderson present. The body discussed Bylaw No. 64 the Trades License Bylaw and considered multiple revenue ideas but reached no firm decision. The meeting adjourned at 11 16 p m.
Charlie Diamond, about 50, was drowned Thursday near the Porto Rico Lumber mill narrows while in a boat with Dan McLennan. Search teams and dynamite were used without success as a body remains unfound. Brother J F Diamond of Cashmere, Wash., plans to travel here. Diamond was a Moyie landmark known for generosity and hospitality.
Peter Matheson runs the Imperial and Wentworth hotels with high standards. The Imperial is popular and constantly full, while Scotty Buchanan has made the Wentworth a top choice with clean rooms and excellent meals, boosting its business and appeal.
Robert Sinclair chief of CPR bridge and building department wed Catherine MacKay at Spokane on June 2. The couple have many friends. Mrs Sinclair served on Hotel Cranbrook staff and is well regarded. The community offers best wishes for their future happiness.
Public notice states all yards and alleys must be cleaned to the Sanitary Inspector’s satisfaction on or before June 1 1909. City Clerk Thos M Roberts signed June 3 1909. A Union Steamship boat Coqitalan fire caused severe burns to Engineer Black and Jay Mireman while en route to Prince Rupert.
Ottawa reports William Sloan former MP for Comox Atlin says there is no truth to rumors he will enter British Columbia politics as opposition leader. He states he is out of politics and will stay out, praising the current BC opposition leader as satisfactory.
Messrs. Pidgeon and Anderson secure the Perry Creek hotel license and plan to start business Saturday. Perry Creek offers good fishing and country fare with milk and fresh vegetables in the Way Of Fees. Guests will be made to feel at home and well cared for. A Sunday at Perry Creek is a nerve bracer and picker upper for the week.
John Galt of Toronto appointed consulting engineer for Cranbrook AVerage system visits East Kootenay. Survey and construction of the Kootenay Telephono Lines proceed. J. B. Hall sails for Medicine Hat then Eastern Canada. School work advances with concrete foundation framing. poles for lines planted south of town. Kootenay Free Press editor G L Pedlar back home after Eastern/North America trip. A Message from Mars to be staged June 15 at the Auditorium with a Minnesota-Dakota delegation visiting.

Over one hundred and fifty feet of the CPR trestle at Kootenay area damaged by high water. Landing destroyed by fire test week. Geary and Doyle add a large carriage-room to their livery barn. A K Leitch and S Richards visited Meadow Creek noting damage to East Kootenay Lumber plant from high water. Both Morrissey wagon and foot bridges washed out. Smith MPP returned from Victoria and says provincial politics are unsettled. Arrangements seek to continue subsidized steamship service between Vancouver and the Antipodes.
