Plucky steamers and historic cables across the straits
Wood Island lies across the strait to Pictou with palatial steamers running between Stummerside and Shediac. Ice-boats cross the straits regularly and one was sent to Russia during the Great War. The first continental submarine cable ran from Cape Traveroe to Cape Formentine by Mr Gisborne, later aiding the first Atlantic cable with Cyrus W. Field.
