Nor imah Gardner of Cranbrook raced a train near Galloway to Jaffray in a sensational Ford showdown. The swatter blocked his view as he led No. 618, then the car toppled over a freight car with bystanders aiding the injured passenger. The Cranbrook Tennis Club held an American Tournament last Saturday despite bad weather to benefit the Tobacco Fund for soldiers. Receipts totaled 7 dollars and were given to the I. D. O. E. Prize winners were Miss Harrison and Mr. A. Fairbairn. Also notes on Ernie Turnley’s holiday, Joe Kennedy’s Calgary visit, and four recruits leaving Cranbrook for Vernon to join the 54th battalion. The Methodist Sunday School picnic was rained out and moved indoors with many children attending.

Indian man ends life after spree near mission
Paul, an Indian man at St. Eugene Mission, died by his own hand Tuesday morning at 6 oclock four miles from the reserve. He had been on a two day spree and struck his wife during his debauch before killing himself with a .22 pistol. An inquest found death by own action while temporarily deranged. He leaves a wife and two children.

Fireman Shoultz Injured In Train Derailment Near Cowley
Train No. 5 514 in charge of Conductor Joseph Jackson and Engineer Fred Bryans derailed two miles east of Cowley due to broken roadbed from heavy rains. Fireman Shoultz of Lethbridge suffered a broken leg while jumping the engine as it toppled. A waiter Edward Lawton sustained a scalp wound and hand wrist injuries. The engine, mail and express cars left the rails. Bryans and Shoultz received medical aid, with Lawton taken to Macleod hospital. The train reached Cranbrook three and a half hours late.
