Manitoba election results show Liberal popular vote lead

Manitoba returns from yesterday’s election indicate a Liberal majority in the popular vote, with Roblin’s Conservatives claiming 26 seats to the Liberals 21 and three deferred races still unsettled. Wedding of Miss Hadith Stephens to J F Broughton in Cranbrook

Miss Hadith Isabel Stephens and Mr J F Broughton wed at Knox church in Cranbrook on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. The reception followed at the Stephens family home with speeches by S Roberts and Rev W K Thorson and a lively house party with music and games. The couple will reside on Cranbrook Street.

School Board Meeting in City Hall on Friday July 10

The school trustees met in city hall last Friday evening July 10 at 8 oclock. Chairman White presided with Trustees Quain Wilson and Laurie. A special committee of Fink and Qualn was appointed to arrange for a new school in the Kootenay Orchards district. Janitor and principal applications were received and laid over for further consideration. Janitor Logan was given authority to hire a team and necessary help at the school grounds for up to two days, with building committee power to act. The finance committee reported accounts for payment including teachers salaries and Kimberley sawmill operations. Output of 80,000 feet per day is being marketed by Otis Staplea Lumber Company Limited, Wycliffe.

Cranbrook bylaw on dam contract labor rules published

City of Cranbrook publishes the contract for dam and water works with Hotson Leader & Goode of Lethbridge. It details employment of white labor, a $40 000 work, a $20 000 bond, wage minimum of 2.50 a day, payroll receipts, semi monthly payments, and engineer’s final say on damages and completions. The notice accompanies other Cranbrook civic items and local industrial notes.

Cranbrook Triumphs Over Fernie In Lax Match 10 to 3

Cranbrook lacrosse team won 10 to 3 against Fernie amid missing regulars and Fernie’s weak forward teamwork. Scorers for Cranbrook included Matthews Crowe Chambers and McDougall for Fernie, with Crowe scoring the lone Cranbrook goal in the third period and Matthews adding another late. Bert Black and Haven made stout defense for Fernie as referee Maurice Quain oversaw the game. Timekeepers were A L McDermot for Cranbrook and Robichaud for Fernie.

Passing of a Pioneer David Griffith 1834 1919 East Kootenay figure

David Griffiths longtime East Kootenay resident and mining entrepreneur died at Fort Steele aged 85. Born in Wales in 1834 he joined the California gold rush era, helped develop Wild Horse placer mining, and later owned mining interests across the Kootenay region. Funeral held Monday evening led by Rev. B P Flewelling. A Leask & Johnson creditors meeting in Cranbrook reported over 95 percent debt represented. future company affairs placed under Leask with a supervising creditors committee.

Orangemen Celebrate 224th Battle Anniversary in Cranbrook

Orangemen from Fernie and districts gathered in Cranbrook for the 224th Boyne anniversary. Despite rain the parade and ceremonies featured Fernie bagpipers, local bands, and speeches by Loyal Orange Lodge leaders. Athletic events yielded multiple prizes, and an evening lacrosse match and ball drew large crowds with a sword dance and bagpipe music concluding the day.
