Irrigation Expands in West Boosts Alberta Saskatchewan Yields
The 1919 drought highlighted irrigation gains across Alberta and Saskatchewan. In the Lethbridge District 145 500 acres yielded 66 200 tons of fodder and 3 775 000 bushels of grain worth about 6 790 000 dollars. Wheat topped two million bushels, oats over one million, barley nearly 400 000, flax 26 000, and 66 000 tons of alfalfa harvested. A Brooks farmer achieved a 9000 dollar harvest of alfalfa seed with an 14 bushels per acre yield. The CPR area east of Calgary holds ~623 600 irrigable acres. Lethbridge ~110 000 acres. Projected annual irrigated value ranges 30 to 35 million dollars with over 40 dollars per irrigated acre. New schemes include southern Alberta expansion around Raymond Sterling and Magrath and Buffalo Lake feasibility diverting North Saskatchewan River flood waters east and south toward Buffalo Lake, Youngstown, and Saskatoon areas. Alberta plans an irrigation experimental farm near Medicine Hat along the Saskatchewan River for about 36 000 acres. Irrigated land tends to improve or maintain crop quality and productivity as farmers gain experience.
