A Cranbrook surveying party surveys White River timber holdings of C D McNab Waldo with crews from Staynes Lake Fort Steele and Baker Lumber to assess potential pulp mill development near Elko. The venture hints Cranbrook’s growth as spruce timber flows toward Kootenay Valley via Canal Flats and White River driving logs amid rumors of McNab interests and Elko pulp plans.

Windermere District opens Memorial Week with the opening day for David Thompson Memorial a great success. French Canadian and Indian dances in the evening crown a day of Indian village pageants and canoe races. The event is steered by Colonel J. B. Dennis and Capt. F. P. Armstrong with local help. Distinguished attendees include Lawrence Burpee Ottawa Thompson Elliott Walla Walla Dr. Mark S. Wade Kamloops Professor Wallace Toronto Professor Allison Winnipeg J Forsyth Victoria and writers Isobel E. McKay Eva H. McKowan Madge McBeath. The week ends with the District Fair on Saturday and a Thompson Memorial dedication on June day morning.
Fire destroyed the sawmill and part of the yards at Campbell and Myers Fort Steele plant on a Thursday night. Insurance coverage is unclear while John Roberts is away in Calgary. Ambrose Staples of Wycliffe 14 is recovering from surgery at the hospital. Miles Olive Langton returned from the Coast where she attended Normal School and was named a teacher at Tivermere School. A batch of missing legal papers found on the street were returned to the office. The Women’s Institute monthly meeting at G W W A Hall on Tuesday will hear Nelson delegates report and feature Flower Show prizes and a Miss Worden pianoforte solo with tea.

In a tense Western Division final, Kimberley beats Wycliffe 11 to 8 after extra innings to secure a playoff spot against Fernie. Perko and Musser led Kimberley with key hits as the crowd of about 500 witnessed a seesaw battle on the Wy life diamond.
A crowd gathered at Mrs. Lippett’s home to honor Miss Lippett as she prepares to attend Victoria Normal School. Gifts from Mr. W. D. Stone accompanied music and games, with thanks extended to all who supported Winnie Lippett’s service at Kootenay Orchard Sunday School and to Mrs. Lippett for the evening.
The Pall Fair attractions committee reports progress securing outside acts and local features for the fair. Prizes include $5 for best Berkshire and Tamworth pigs under six months, $10 for a 1600 lb team harness, and $20 from East Kootenay Lumber Co. for director’s prizes. A Moyie Super Spruce prize offers $10 in merchandise for guessing the cubic inches in a piece of wood, with other contests for freckled faces and curly hair.
The G W V A prepares for its second Garden Party of the season Monday evening September 4 at 8 pm. Games of skill and chance, refreshments, and music from 1 m until 1 a m will be offered with separate admission for each dance. Visitors may view Veterans quarters and learn about Cranbrook housing for returned men.
