Gouncil Fixes Taxes at Special Meeting

The City Council met Tuesday and approved the annual estimates totaling 78 208.78 with detailed allocations for Fire, Works and Property, Water, Health, School, Debentures, and other items. The tax by law sets rates including school, health, debentures, and general levies, with a 1/6 discount for early payment. City Engineer W H Basie resigned. bids invited for roofing and interior renovation of City Hall. A memorial list for Cranbrook war dead is to be compiled, and local court actions were reported: McGillivray vs Staples Lumber with plaintiff awarded wages, Jones & Doris vs J O Ingham settled out of court.

YMCA Appeal Calls for War Overseas Aid May 7 8

Lumber yard gains new owners in Lethbridge move

P Lind & Son acquire the Lumber yard and premises once owned by Barmers Lumber Co. Ltd at Ard Avenue and 17th Street. They add a northward unloading site and set Lethbridge as headquarters. Peter Lind shifts focus to Lethbridge and ranching in B C while son Arthur sails overseas with a battery draft from Calgary.

Board of Trade Inaugurates Anti Knockers Campaign

The Cranbrook merchants and local Boards of Trade pressed Ottawa and federal authorities to improve mail service between Cranbrook and Kootenay Central, aiming for direct Cranbrook rail conveyance. They also launched an anti knockers campaign urging residents to boost the town and reinforce community loyalty with a 1000 circular letters to merchants.

Police Court Notes Dismiss Brault Liquor Charge And Canvass For Board Members

Adjourned hearing in Buchanan case at Cross Keys Hotel

The adjourned hearing on the Buchanan and Lind case raised police entry powers under the B C Prohibition Act with warrants needed for arrests. McGillivray v Staples Lumber Company wage dispute

W A Nisbet appears for the plaintiff and G J Spreull for the defendant in an action for wages. The plaintiff alleges he was employed at 46 cents per hour, asked for 48, and was promised 48 from June 1, with later contention that an October increase was granted while June paid at 48 then disputed. The defendant offers 45 cents and offsets overpayment for June. The judge cites Odum Singh v Staples Lumber, Standard Lumber Co v Lezert, and Bechlein precedents, upholding the credibility of a positive witness.

Cran Brook Tennis Club Annual Meeting Held at City Hall

The Cran brook Tennis Club convened its annual meeting in City Hall on Tuesday evening April 16 with strong attendance. Officials elected include Hon. President R. E. Beattie, President N. A. Wallinger, Secretary-Treasurer A. Raworth, and committee members Burgess Paley D Kay, with Miss Mariel Wallinger on the Ladies Committee. Members discussed Saturday teas. the ladies agreed to supply tea and bread. Courts are in good shape and the club seeks new members, contact Mr A Raworth.
