The Cranbrook Turf Athletic Association will hold a spring meeting May 27 and 28 with athletic sports on day one and horse racing on day two. Purses and prizes total 1000, promising a successful event overall. The text also notes church annual meeting proceedings at Christ Church Viola.
The Cranbrook Baseball Club posts a postponed dance rescheduled for Wednesday night May 1 as the season finale. Townspeople are urged to attend to enjoy an evening of pleasure and support a good cause. Patronesses include Mrs J R Costigan Mrs F R Morris and Mrs F Simpson.
The Odd Fellows of Cranbrook announce an open session next Friday evening to mark the eighty second anniversary of Odd Fellowship. Members and nonmembers are urged to attend with families for a short program. On Sunday the 28th the annel church service will be at Presbyterian church at 1 45 PM with Rev For one preaching and special music. All Odd Fellows citywide are asked to meet at the lodge room at 1 30 PM to march to the church. Public invitation extended.
Fireman James Powers fell from a switch engine into a lake near Sirdai while crossing a trestle. Sim Palmer, known in South East Kootenay, died after a fall from a hotel veranda in Macleod. The Cosmopolitan hotel in the Kootenays undergoes renovation and refunneling under Mr. Small’s plans to improve comfort.
The Southeastern Kootenay region thrives on galena from Moyie and Kimberley mines, coal from Fernie, and extensive timber. Cranbrook anchors the district with rail junctions, large yards, multiple mills, abundant hotels, a strong paper, growing schools, and active churches.
Fernie reports include Miss M. Tritton's Cranbrook trip, a large wild cat shot near Mr. Janes, and a lifted quarantine at Michel. Cranbrook visitors, tows, and a large social at Northern hotel are noted. A football meeting organized for the season elected Captain Win Taylor and Sherchmer as executive rep. Population estimate for Fernie area at about 2400.
The St Eugene mine resumes shipping at high daily volumes to meet a 1500 ton month end target while about 60 workers remain employed during the pause. A proposed two to three day weekly mill run and dump processing is likely until full reopening. Nearby dam work on Campbell Creek advances with finishing by May first, aiming for Moyie’s enhanced waterworks system. Grant and Sheady plan a new mill between the C P R station and the St Eugene concentrator with framing already under way and a June 1 operation target. Muir's mill reopens after overhaul with log drives in two large booms and lake traffic increasing as ice clears. Grant continues boatbuilding. eight to ten first class row boats line Moyie lake each evening. Reid and Campbell contribute to general news.
Improvements in their store attract attention as the front is described as very attractive. Mr Williams and family plan to leave early in the week for Fernie. Tom Rader returns Tuesday from Spokane trip aboard the Aurora. Dr Barber Cranbrook dentist spent past week in Moyie on professional business. Michael Sheady of Grant and Sheady returns to Moyie from St Paul last week. Miss Josephine Huggins left for Spokane visit last week. May 4 election to choose five wardens in Moyie. A graveyard picnic last Tuesday drew a large crowd despite rain. Purpose was to beautify graves. Thomas Christian is again in Moyie employed by Hill and Joll. Odd Fellows plan joint service next Sunday evening. Rev Grigg to preach. P D Hope druggist went to Fort Steele Tuesday.
Libby News reports Jennings ready for a brief boom as a railroad to northern coal fields moves toward construction. Great Northern engineers begin cross sectioning, with grade work soon to start and roads contracts likely. Michaud Bros from Libby hire on for $150 a month to haul supplies. North Star steamer to be used for transport during road building. President Jim Hill confirms road construction plans on his coast trip.
The Moyie Leader, three years old, honors founder Fred Smyth who brought the plant by mud sled and launched the paper amid hardship. Smyth kept faith through lean times, promising prosperity as Moyie grew, with St Eugene’s suspension noted and the editor praised for a bright future.
One of the best concerts ever given in Cranbrook was by the Foot Hall association on Tuesday evening. The program was excellent from start to finish and closed at 10 30 to general approval. Encores were well received and the association was praised for its first concert effort.
Jud Langley census commissioner reports district data gathering nearly finished. Enumerators should wrap in two to three days except C M Edwards who is quarantined but resumed work and will finish next week.
The Crows Nest Southern railway bill wins unanimous approval from the House of Commons railway committee. The charter imposes conditions to prevent unfair price and transport discrimination between coal, coke, and Canada consumers, with penalties and possible suspension during new competition. Also includes a series of Canadian Pacific railway appointments announced in Montreal.
