BC Workmen's Compensation Act aims for no litigated claims
Victoria April 13. Premier Bowser introduces a broad BC Workmen's Compensation Act. It replaces court actions with insured benefits for most hazardous occupations, omits farm labor and domestic service, and extends to railway workers and many industries. It creates a medical aid system and an accident prevention division, with rules for admission, partial coverage, and cross province claims, continuing after a continuation clause.

School grounds undergo active improvements and gardens
The school grounds are abuzz with work for new gardens and upgraded playgrounds. Two sand pits for younger children, five cement bedded swings, four basketball courts, and two baseball diamonds are being installed. Trees will be planted 24 feet apart with shrubbery. front and city sides will receive flower gardens while rear areas house vegetable gardens. A shipment of trees is expected and perennials will enrich the flower beds this year.

Four prisoners arraigned before Judge Arnold on Monday
Charlie Baker received seven days for begging. Eric Klemedde and Christian Toronto fined five dollars each for drunk and disorderly, paid and left. John Janson, who resisted arrest, got thirty days for being drunk and disorderly and resisting, with a nod to road costs. Lumbermen from Bull River were among the offenders. Saturday night liquor stockpiles led to the incidents.

Two New Recruits in the 226th at Cranbrook
The 226th at Cranbrook adds two new recruits, Frederick Marcellais of Canada with two years in the 90th Rifles and Joseph Dunn of Canada with four years in the artillery. Recruitment remains slow with only two signed recently. From yesterday, hotels are restricted to five to eight pm.

Annual Meeting At YMCA Rail Way Board Re elected
The Rail way YMCA held its annual meeting on Wednesday evening. The old board was re elected with H White as president and W S Macdonald as vice president. The statement showed receipts of 8766 73 and expenditures of 8679 11 leaving 87 62 on hand. Sergt Freeman gave a war service talk after refreshments and the Ladies Auxiliary reported a prosperous year.

Death of Donald MacIntosh Miner in British Columbia
Donald MacIntosh died of heart disease at Slocan hospital New Denver on April 12. He last worked at Galena Farm mine near Silverton. The Oddfellows lodge of London conducted his funeral with attendees from Landon, Silverton and New Denver. He originated from eastern Canada and lived in the west for many years, working in Moyie area mines and Cranbrook Government road projects.

Cherniavskys Delight Audiences Despite Violinist Illness
The Cherniavsky brothers Jan and Mischel performed a superb program with Alec as accompanist while Leo was ill in Calgary. Mischel drew universal praise for cello mastery and harmonics, Jan showed technical brilliancy on piano, and the trio concluded with national anthems. The audience cheered the abbreviated concert and hosts afterward entertained them at Rev. W. H. Bridge's home.

The Cranbrook Branch of the Canadian Patriotic Fund closes its 81st August 1916 financial year at March end with $6920.82 collected and sent to the Provincial Branch in Victoria. Monthly receipts ranged from $861.90 in September 1915 to $1295.96 in March 1916. The local branch aided 13 families totaling $1484.68 during the period. Moyle Valley Farmers Institute Yahk contributed $14.60 from a recent social, and Sullivan Mine Relief Society continues its regular $100 monthly donation.
