A CPR Express train derailed near Chapleau Ontario after a broken rail. Eleven passengers eight adults and three children perished in a fire after the tourist coach burned. Eighteen others were seriously injured with more deaths anticipated.
London hosts the fourth colonial conference with leaders Jameson Deakin Laurier Ward and Botha present to discuss a permanent imperial council preferential trade defense and immigration issues. Premier Botha arrives to press loyalty while New Zealand opposes Asiatic admission. Fifty Cecil hotel rooms reserved for guests who will be hosted at banquets and city tours.
The Chicago conference mediated by Martin A. Knapp and Charles P. Neill reached a compromise ending the western railroad dispute. The agreement raises wages about 10 percent, with specific increases for brakemen, baggagemen, and conductors and no reduction in crews, while preserving public interests and avoiding a strike. President Roosevelt lauds the government mediation and the deal involves 60,000 workers across 40 railroads.
Ottawa rumors say Hon. Mr. Emmerson resigns from the railways and canals portfolio after libel actions against the Fredericton Gleaner Toronto World and Halifax Herald. He vows to vindicate his character in court and receives Liberal and opposition sympathy, with hopes to return to the department.
Lethbridge Alta April 7 The contract for adding a third section to the six stall Cranbrook roundhouse is let. Winnipeg contractor James McDiarmid, who built the first two sections, will oversee the project with a price around 18000. The completed eight stall facility may cost 74000 to 80000 and will include heating by Jas Ballantine Co Ltd Winnipeg. Cement work starts this week. McDiarmid also holds contracts for a six stall Cranbrook addition, a four stall Strathcona, and a Swift Current roundhouse.
