Wigwag signal to guard dangerous Rover's Crossing
The Covington road and Peoria Eastern rail line crossing, three fourths of a mile west of the city, will be protected by a wigwag signal and bell in daytime and a flash light and bell at night. The crossing has caused numerous deaths and injuries in the past decade, including a triple tragedy about a year ago. The wigwag system uses two small axles on a pole connected to the rails and power, with bells in the same circuit. Daytime operation starts as the train reaches the quarter mile point, moving the arms and ringing the bell until the train clears. At night a flashing white and red light accompanies the bell.
