Letters from Pekin Soldier Describe Siege and Surrender
A soldier in Pekin writes from China in Aug 1800 describing the city’s walls five rings deep and the Imperial surrender around eleven o clock. He notes American troops on the walls, heavy artillery, and the camp inside the walls with ample rations. He mentions Captain and Brigadier General Chaffee and says his troop rode atop the city wall during combat. The tone mixes hardship with curiosity about life in a distant siege.
