Tragic Hillsboro Self-Inflicted Gunshot Death
Elmer Ellis, 20, shot himself when a .32 caliber revolver exploded in his hand at Hughy Hughes’s Hillsboro home after being warned the weapon was loaded. An inquest found no clear evidence of foul play, though friends doubt it was accidental as Ellis and Hughes had been together hours earlier and Ellis appeared in good spirits. Ellis was brother in law to Warren C. Powers, editor of the Hillsboro Times.
