Stefansson's Battle With Ice Near Point Barrow
John Munro reports from Point Barrow on the Stefansson expedition voyage of the Karluk. After long delays at Port Clarence and with the Mary Sachs and Alaska bringing relief, the Karluk became ice bound forty miles from Point Barrow. Captain Bartlett attempted to push through but deteriorating weather and ice forced a halt. By Aug. 3 Stefansson and Dr. McKay prepared to trek toward Point Barrow as the Karluk drifted in the ice. The ship later reached Point Barrow but remained trapped, with telegraphic communication cut and mail slow. The piece notes potential rescue delays and possible loss if the ship founder.
