Revenue Case in Parliament Involving John Embleton Vessel
John Embleton a mariner and captain faced heavy penalties around 1,400 pounds for contraband items found on his Northumberland vessel during a March 1822 Humber seizure. Affidavits cleared the crew of master’s knowledge yet he was later convicted on additional counts for leaving goods and allowing passengers to land with trunks. The matter prompted petitions and scrutiny of trial delays and costs.
