Cattle Die After Silage Poisoning At Herbison Farm
In eastern Pierce County the death toll reached 133 head of replacement heifers and dairy steers after corn silage allegedly laced with Dyfonate was fed. The Herbison family denies using the insecticide and suspects deliberate poisoning, as the silo with the tainted silage was opened the night before the deaths. Sheriff Stan Christiansen opened an investigation while veterinarians treated some remaining cattle. The incident prompted the disposal of carcasses and raised questions about where the silage originated and how the herd was fed. The loss is estimated near $100,000 with 140 head exposed.
