Embryo Transplant Lambs Born in Michigan Research Center

Six purebred Suffolk lambs born at Michigan State University's Sheep Research Center mark the first embryo transplant results in the United States. Four recipient ewes carried eight transferred embryos from two donor ewes, all sired by Quasar owned by Al Culham and Gene Graham. Veterinarian Darold McCalla notes higher costs, surgical removal, lack of frozen ram semen, and seasonal breeding as current limits, but believes embryo transfer offers faster propagation of superior stock and plans further work this fall.
