Wisconsin Wolf Study Faces Budget Cut Threat
Wisconsin's timber wolf research, begun last year by DNA wolf biologist Dick Thiel and monitoring about 24 wolves, faces possible end due to Reagan administration cuts to endangered species funding. The $22,000 annual project relies on 75 percent federal funds. a phaseout would end radio-collar monitoring, deny data on packs from Douglas and Pine Counties to Merrill area, and risk loss of insights into wolf denning and growth.
