Karastes Cow Herd Goes Up For Sale After 38 Years
Bud and Betty Karastes of St. Croix County, Wisconsin, plan to stop milking and sell their high producing VIP grade Holsteins. The 35 cows average 20 760 pounds of milk and 792 pounds butterfat, a herd built over 38 years without outside purchases. They intend to sell as a unit to a buyer starting out or expanding, insisting on humane care and personal inspection of prospective owners. The couple have no sons to carry on the dairy, and a long history of DHIA leadership.

Duncan Creek Farms dispersal set for May 27
The Duncan Creek Farms Holstein herd of Mervin and Richard Marquardt of Bloomer will disperse May 27 under Alvin Piper and Associates. About 50 cows and 50 head of young stock, mostly with Duncan Creek prefix, will be sold as the brothers split assets after long partnership. Mervin retires at 53. Richard continues cash cropping and Berkshire hogs on the 320 acre farm.

Mullen favors merchandising cows in August dispersal
Don and Priscilla Mullen plan an Aug 28 herd dispersal at Prairie-Vu Farm Rt. 3 Bloomer. They will sell most of their herd while retaining two thirds of a barnful of replacements. The Mullens aim to pay off the farm and reinvest proceeds to build a stronger enterprise.
