Dry cows are vital to dairy herds says Larsen
Howard Larsen extension dairy scientist told Barron County Dairy Day the dry cow is not a necessary evil but a key phase before the next lactation. He urged feeding plans aligned with lactation needs and warned that overfeeding during dry periods can cause fat cows and health issues like ketosis and milk fever. He cited oats, high quality grass hay, and grass silage as ideal forages, avoiding legumes and corn silage for dry cows.
