Guinea flocks and watchdog guineas shape a Wisconsin farm
West of here Carroll, a former Uniroyal employee, raises guineas strictly for meat. The two color varieties, pearls and white, yield dark meat and light dry meat respectively. Guinea fowl history and farming facts for farmers
Guineas or guinea fowl originate from west Africa and are valued as game birds in Africa and England. In the US about 250 000 were raised around 1963, with one million on farms in 1939. In captivity one male can fertilize up to five females, hens lay up to 100 eggs yearly starting in March or April, and they often nest in weeds or along brushy rows. Eggs weigh about 1.4 ounces, smaller than chicken eggs.
