Hazardous ice conditions prompt state cautions across Minnesota

With warm temperatures, lake and river ice have become hazardous for anglers and snowmobilers statewide. The DNA warned to use extreme care on the ice as cross country ski and snowmobile trails deteriorate. Ice shacks must be off boundary waters by March 1 and off the ice south of Highway 64 by March 15 north of Highway 64, with portable shelters allowed after these dates only if removed daily when not in use.

Jackson County officials discuss a cross county program to employ welfare recipients in cutting fire wood for seniors. A small crew already works in Jackson County with 10 000 acres pending replanting. Logs would be shipped to Milwaukee County for processing into stove lengths.

Rice Lake farmer named one of nation's best young farmers

Rice Lake potato farmer John Mommsen was named one of four 1983 Outstanding Young Farmers by the United States Jaycees and John Deere. He credits his father Myron for support and ownership of Lazy A Potato Ranch, a 2,765 acre operation near Rice Lake with crops including potatoes, corn, beans, and clover.

Survey shows large farmers enrolling in PIK program

Milwaukee based AgriData Resources surveyed 200 large parcel landowners and found 85 percent of corn growers and 84 percent of wheat farmers intend to sign up for the government payment-in-kind program. Just under half had enrolled before this survey, with signup ends March 11.

Wisconsin Weekend Thunderstorm Possibility Forecast

The National Weather Service in Twin Cities predicts the first thunderstorm of the season may arrive this weekend in west central Wisconsin. Temperatures Thursday through Saturday are expected to reach the 40s with overnight lows in the 30s.
