Population swings of the dickcissel in Wisconsin
A Wisconsin naturalist notes year to year dickcissel population variability. Peak years 1964 1967 and 1968 stand out, with a dramatic 225 individuals in Dane County in 1964 and over 1 000 000 in the southwest. Breeding Bird Survey indexes show a long decline through the 1970s while meadowlark numbers remain steadier. The writer invites readers to report sightings and shares farm conservation ideas to attract and nest birds.
