Wisconsin berry growers face rising costs and market shifts
Production costs for berries run from 1500 to 3000 dollars per acre with patch picking cheaper but lower returns. Farmers like Stanley rely on trucking 35 to 40 percent of sales while stand sales and pick your own fill the rest. Heat waves and gas shortages threaten supply and tourist traffic, but wholesale opportunities may grow as local competition tightens. Veteran growers Beetle couple near retirement recall decades selling berries and pride in strong customer relations.
